SDTV

I've never used one of these, but I would be shocked if they didn't pick up all the subchannels. The digital tuning circuitry should be similar to stand-alone boxes and tuners in HDTV sets...there would be no reason not to pick up the subchannels.

A TV advertised as "SDTV" simply means Standard Definition TV, which can apply to almost any TV ever made. To receive any digital channels (including subchannels), make sure the ad, the TV box, whatever, says "QAM Tuner" or "Receives digital broadcasts". None of the channels on this type of TV will be shown in High Definition.

Not necessarily.

The TV manufacturers are using an official "SDTV" logo to advertise the new non-HDTV sets with built-in digital tuners.

If you're in the store and see this, it's not used to describe analog sets anywhere I've seen it...

In Canada, there's HD digital boxes for *any* tv that claims to be HDTV compatible. I'm not sure about the States though.

Different thing, again.

The already existing DTV boxes will output both in HDTV and SD. I have one of them in my office. It's currently driving a cheap 12 inch TV via its composite inputs, but can also drive component video in HD...

"SDTV", again, is a marketing term/logo now being used to sell the new digital-tuner equipped sets mandated by law...that are not HD. You'll still see the HD programming, but downconverted to SD resolutions.
