Seabreeze 106.3 gets hoodwinked

I can't help but notice that the regulars on this board post praises about Mark Carter and his Destin based radio station WSBZ, so I thought this tidbit might interest some of you.

Yesterday I received the new 2008 copy of the Gulf Breeze-Pensacola Beach phone book, published by Hearst Magazines. After I took a look at it to see how bad they screwed up my yellow pages add this year I noticed that Seabreeze 106.3 is one of the 3 featured advertisers on the front cover. In case you haven't caught on yet, 106.3's signal doesn't reach Santa Rosa county or Pensacola Beach...at all. You would have to have a roof top yagi antenna pointed right at their tower to pick it up. So some phone book advertising rep ripped off Mark Carter and got him to place an expensive add in an out of market publication. How could he have fallen for something like this?

Also, the phone book doesn't list WSBZ in the White or Yellow pages, but they do list the "request line" for WDWG along with a couple other Mobile stations. I was surprised that the request line for 98 Surf wasn't listed.

On a brighter note, "Rob's Tub & Tile Reglazing" is also featured on the front cover, so hopefully good old Rob will be rolling in the dough later this year! ;D

Their signal barely covers FWB. They send out 6KW and despretly need to apply for a CP for a powerboost or a tower height increase.

Isn't there tower in Santa Rosa Beach?
(I did pick it up at the burger king in navarre, BTW)

-Rob

What phone book company is it? I would like to see the cover.

I'll save Charlie the trouble (and rise in blood pressure): rob, for the 1034th time, a station can't
just request a power increase or tower height modification. this is especially true for class A FMs...
like 106.3. their signal is what it's gonna be. BTW, I used to listen to them in PCB...just west of 79.

thanks Romer....I was about 3 feet off the floor until I read your post...I was already putting the email together in my mind and my eyes had shot out of my head, steam was coming out of both ears....my blood pressure was 160/120 but when I read your post, everything fell back in place.....I guess Rob just doesn't understand the REAL world (and it looks like he NEVER will)...thanks for the assistance Romer!

wooten

Sorry Romer....I couldn't help it....

Rob....please listen very carefully....and repeat after me......

Certain technical requirements for upgrading a station or starting a new station must be met before a station can even apply to the FCC for a construction permit. Sometimes (most of the time) upgrades are not available in most locations on most frequencies due to existing stations on that frequency or adjacent frequency.

Y'all have a nice weekend...........

wooten

Charlie, I've got a big bottle of Zestril for that blood pressure thang......hope it helps. Hey, just for giggles, who has the most powerful signal in Pensacola, and Panama City. What about Mobile for that matter?

vadar...thanks....I already have some BP pressure medicine...but if rob does that again, I might need to borrow some of yours....

Sunny 98.5 has the highest power at the highest antenna height in Panama City....not sure about Pensacola/Mobile....there are several shared multiplexed sites at the antenna farm in Baldwin County....you may have several 100kw stations at the same height since they share the same antenna.

Answer to the question...

Read the fine print --- it's an ad for the Seabreeze Jazz Festival in April 2009. If people from that area drive to
the event Mark banks $$$. Pretty smart. Mark's vindicated. Yeah!

Rob? You planning to go to the show? You might want to start packing soon. Is the mule up for a cross county drive?

And Romer, ain't two spots on this board for Nashville boys kissing up to Charlie. Back off. He's a beer man, not
Arbor Mist. ;D

Rob, you need to consider doing promos for tower enhancement ads on your website. Maybe Mark or the FCC will bite.
You know what I mean. No comment on the strobey things.

im going to guess 99.9

Area of Coverage
Effective Radiated Power 94,000 Watts
Height above Avg. Terrain 535 meters (1755 feet)
Height above Ground Level 517 meters (1696 feet)
Height above Sea Level 569 meters (1867 feet)

and im well aware of the bullshit a radio station has to go through to do all of this.
please stop the complaining it's best to /ignore it and move on.

BTW, 107.3 moved to their new tower their signal is weaker here.

and about the site, im having it worked on (hopefully soon) and no i will not bash the FCC ever.

That's OK..they're on the Broadcast Architecture Network satellite feed so it's not like they are "wasting" money on live human air talent. They might as well throw it away somewhere else. More BabyFace and old Motown anyone???

Wow, that's a monster stick. Charlie, not that I'm doubting Rob, but can you confirm this?

Tibbs, you certainly were more observant than I am. When I saw the add I didn't understand why the April 2009 dates were listed and I didn't even see the picture of the man blowing his horn. But it's still a bad add. I searched the book and found no information whatsoever on the Seabreeze Jazz Fest. If my memory serves me, the event is also sponsored by WEAR TV 3, WFGX TV 35 and WUWF 88.1 who all promo it for a couple weeks before the festival. These broadcast stations cover the Destin area. It still seems like a waste of money to put an incomplete front page add for this festival on the cover of a phone book 90 minutes away from the festival site.
In previous years the Gulf Breeze phone book simply featured the Blue Angles, who put on 4 air shows within a 20 minute drive of Gulf Breeze (2 of them are in our own back yards on Pensacola Beach). In fact, this phone book doesn't contain a listing of local festivities like most phone books do. I paid about 750$ for a 2x3 inch black and white add in this book, WSBZ must have paid at least a couple thousand for that front page add which I still believe will do nothing for them.
I guess I'll have to wait till next year to see if they go all out advertising the Seabreeze Jazz Fest, because if they do the same advertising they've done in the last few years, this add is defiantly a dud.

Rob, you've been on this board for a while. You show interest in local stations. Surely you are aware that 106.3, WKNU, a country station in Brewton, is less than 50 miles north of you. (Screw the mule drive time) They put a decent signal into Milton. The only reason you're getting WSBZ instead of WKNU is the location of the tower near the Gulf of Mexico. There is no way for either WKNU or WSBZ to increase power. In fact, they probably have an agreement to accept interference from each other.

I am biases here. Of the six phone books distributed in Escambia and Santa Rosa county I have never had my signed proof published. The books all refuse to refund any of my money for their mistakes. I hate them all with a passion. In fact, when the new Yellow Book salesman walked into my office last year I immediately told him to get the heck out of my office.

those stick numbers on 99.9 sound about right...there are other stations that share that antenna with 99.9, so there are more than one that have that much height and power.....anyone can go to the FCC website and check a station's license info....from www.fcc.gov click on media bureau then click on audio division then choose FM search....fill your search info and it will show you all the info about a station including power, pending applications, antenna height info, etc......god tibbs.... rob will be busy for months now.....

Item 2: yes WKNU and WSBZ upgraded to 6 kw several years ago simultaneously by mutual agreement....I did the upgrade on both of them..

Item 3: It is my understanding that the 2009 Seabreeze Jazz Festival will be at Pier Park on Panama City Beach...but I could be wrong....that is what I heard...Mark changed the venue to Pier Park after the 2008 festival.

Gold. Simply gold.

Does the owner take a pill or is it more of a salve that's slabbed on the tower itself? :D

Meet Rod. Rod takes "excite", the natural way to enhance your stick. Ad nauseum.
