Star's website says that Seacrest will start on June 16. Yea, I can hardly wait.

and the other mid-day hosts coast to coast at CCU's hot AC/AC formats are walking on eggshells.

Yeah, I guess, but man - I sure hate big music stations flyin' by the bird. Especially in a rated timeslot.

The more the big corporations give lip service to "localism" - the less I believe 'em.

The only "up side" of this would be the demise of the lame ass midday dork on KGB!!!! He should never have been allowed in front of an open mic! I miss Jim McInnis!! Give Bobbie Hill more air time - she knows the format unlike the current midday moron!

I miss Jim McInnis!!

Jim McInnis was the best jock on the air in my 30 years in San Diego, a whole six months of which I did afternoon drive on KPRI against him. He won, I became an engineer.

i miss jim as well.as for kiis(not kiss)a want to be !kgb went south fast!voicetracking as well as a answering machiene for the request line!what the hell??

i remember when people were giving the guys at X trouble because they weren't FROM san diego. be glad they are IN san diego, and live. thats becoming a rarity nowadays.

I don't think the world needs to give any more airtime to Seacrest, but the truth is that "local" DJ's are pretty lame other than a couple of morning shows and maybe an occasional afternoon or evening person. Jocks merely read liners these days and most are not allowed, and probably could not, adlib worth a darn or come up with an interesting quip. The two jocks on the Walrus pretty much tell you their names, that's the extent of their act and they bring nothing to the table to set them apart from someone voice-tracking a show for San Diego from North Dakota: an out-of-town jock with good writers (which Seacrest has) or no jock at all is an improvement over most of what happens between songs and commercial breaks. The sad truth is, most jocks are not entertainers, none are allowed to be musicologists and after 10AM they pretty much become interchangeable pieces. I stopped listening to the Walrus during those hours when they have jocks and probably the people who are prone to listen to a 94.1 one will get a lot more to entertain them from a Seacrest than from some person sitting in a San Diego studio doing time and temp (to be fair, jocks with Top 40 roots, such as Shotgun Tom, have proven you can do time and temp with a unique personality).

Listening to XM radio a lot this past year has really changed the way I view radio: program directors have spent years removing the personality from DJ's in favor of canned patter (liners) presumably designed to ensure maximum blandness. I hate to admit it, but long before Clear Channel came along, "localism" was mostly someone saying, "it's 72 degrees in Pacific Beach," and Clear Channel realized that it actually does not matter if the person who says that even knows where Pacific Beach is located: they just took "business as usual" and tried to make it even cheaper to produce it. Radio is no longer an entertainment medium supported by advertising, it's an advertising medium that must play music or have news and talk shows to attract advertising consumers, much the way billboards have to be located alongside highways.

He's not my cup of tea, but Seacrest seems to be considered an entertainer and who knows, maybe something will click and radio find out that listeners do indeed like to be entertained in the afternoon.

I agree with Bob_Hudson...

There is a dimension of a personality that grows beyond a format, if the jock is intelligent, talented and brave. Shotgun is one. My favorite was The Real Don Steele, who could read the Owner's Manual to the Toro Leaf Blower and interpret it in his own style - complete with those double-entendres - and make us laugh out loud.

My favorite of his, I never heard directly. Shotgun told me about it. Don was on the air, reading a live piece of copy for a watch company. During the copy, Don ad-libbed that the watch was high-tech, like the one Dick Tracy liked to use. He said, "...and if you don't think so, then YOU DON'T KNOW DICK!"

That's so "Don" and even without the double-meaning, it is a fine illustration of how skill and imagination can bring the personality to life. Corporate radio killed those opportunities, just about everywhere.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

There have been some great DJs in San Diego. Unfortunately The very best dj is doing afternoon drive at KRTH 101 instead of San Diego. The other greats like Chuck Cooper and Mike McGregor are behind the scenes. The great Gene Knight has been relogated to Soft Rock and lots and lots and lots of it. There hasn't been a decent dj that has signed on the air in San Diego for over 10 years (and that includes myself). With Ryan Seacrest, he is a Clear Channel property so of course like Rush and Doctor Laura, C.C. is going to utilize that property however they can, but I do think that Hillary was really good on the air, and she is a very nice lady!

I agree 100% with everything Bob Hudson & Bossradiofan wote; personalities made stations such as KHJ & KCBQ what they were when I was growing up; KCBQ had a killer signal here in LA in 1970 when Charlie Tuna joined for mornings, with folks such as Christopher Cain, Gene Knight, Bill Moffitt, & Rich 'Brother' Robbin as enjoyable to listen to as the lineups at KHJ & KRLA.

Clear Channel's obssession with micromanageent and ruthless cost-cutting has destroyed the lives of too many personalities to count.

I don't think Seacrest needs any more outlets either, but many top 40 stations are about to have to put up with him anyway.

I believe it's more of macro-management. "Either you're with us, or against us." KOGO-AM 600 is becoming KFI light.

The weekend programming (thankfully on those paid-shows) are disappearing on AM 600. While the replacement are fine shows (Jesus Christ; Leo Laporte), what about the home team? I can listen to those shows on AM 640.

The only thing San Antonio seems to be worried about is how cheap can the channel go. Syndicated shows are fine, however if avail on multiple AM stations, does it make sense? It does for the bean counters, not for the audience. Give me local, or give me back my XM radio.

Meanwhile look for those scarce extra dollars on Granite Ridge to find its way to Texas. Would you like fries with that, Mr. Mays?

We're calling it XM-Sirius these days (Can't beat the nearly 200 channels and Howard, The Strobe and The Beat).

Seriously (no pun intended), my question (or request) to CCU is this: "If you can't afford to run radio stations properly and make a profit, why do you still have them, hm?" I guess they'd rather run them poorly and make a small profit, rather than run nothing at all.
I'm right there with you on this one Chris, make no mistake about that!
Clear Channel gutted 6 stations here, and then skipped town :(
Bring on the satellite radio, I did...

It is NOT combined yet. Nor can you buy programming on the proposed combo. The deal has to be OK'd by the Federal Communications Commission.

For those keeping score at home:

XM
Sirius

The proposed deal would have the company called XM.

Thanks for playing! Johnny, tell him what the consolation prize is .....

In many cases, the value of the properties they own is less than that for which they were acquired. In other words, CCU is underwater on their stick values and need to continue to operate them or sell them at large losses. It was the craziness of 20 times multiples in the 90's. They have already taken losses on a number of smaller market properties, and would get killed in trying to liquidate what remains. The amount of capital they've poured into HD (hybrid digital, not high definition) radio hasn't helped their bottom line in the least as well.
