Seahawk Games on KBSG!

In a very smart move, Bonneville will be airing Seahawk games beginning next Fall 2008. That is fantastic. If they can engineer 5.1 surround-sound, that would be absolutely incredible. I can't wait!!

My thinking is that this is a pre-emptive counter-tactic against a presumed Sports Radio on 104.5.

You mean Bonneville is not carrying the Seahawks now? ???

BIGGER STORY: 710 KIRO remains the Seahawks flagship

Under a multiyear contract extension announced Friday. KIRO has had the Seahawks every year except one.

B97.3 will simulcast the PxP but not the pregame or postgame shows.

Clearly the newbies here don't know about the failed KISW Seahawks simulcast just a few years ago. But hey - better they put the games on than those tired oldies and voice tracks!

There are a number of NFL teams that run their PBP on FM. Bottom line, if the team is winning, it is a good choice. But FM's should have an "out" if the team starts to dive. I know, sponsorships, blah, blah, blah....but that should be written into the contracts. A 3-10 record late into the season will never win against the regular music format. Cross the T's, and dot the I's.

If you capitalize the I's, as you did, you won't need to dot them.

NFL has been making an effort to go to FM, primarily on rock stations. A simulcast has multiple benefits for the Seahawks. From a cume point of view the games make little difference in overall numbers, since they are primarily onfor a few hours on weekends and TV takes a big share of the audience.

Baseball is a different story with 160 plus games (vs 16 for football) and aired in all dayparts and during the week. In addition many games are only heard on radio, or by people in their cars going to and from work.

When is the Mariner contract up? Could the new 104.5 be gunning for the M's? Is this a move to make KBSG a sports FM? Lots of questions.

But not full coverage

B97.3 is NOT the Seahawks flagship. KIRO is the Seahawks flagship.

So the NFL is "making an effort to go to FM". Big farkin' s#)t! Seattle remains a strong market for AM radio because the hills play havoc with FM signals.

In fact, KIRO will have a 3-hour pregame show for the Seahawks beginning in 2008. An FM flagship cannot do a 3-hour pregame without blowing out their ratings.

Also, that "failed KISW Seahawks simulcast" was anything but. Rock 100 was the team's flagship for one year and the club then went back to KIRO.

This will bring a huge increase to KBSG's cume and increase their listening sample as the station slightly shifts the music format. I don't think they will be going towards a sports format.

RGM

Great points all around on this. Several rock stations around the country have tried to run NFL games (the demos, NFL, and Rock seem to make sense.). And several have really gotten KILLED running them too.

I think KBSG's potential upside with this, bringing in new listeners, outweighs the potential risks, (yes, a 2-8 start would be a disaster for a station knotted up with 6 hours of football every Sunday for the next 6 or 7 weeks.)

The south sound crowd for the Seachickens is HUGE. If you want some of that demo (and I'm sure KBSG does), they're in the right place.

KBSG might get a nice Sunday bump in an otherwise low cume time slot, but I've yet to see a station convert that sports listenership into P1's. As soon as the game's over, they're gone! KISW was a much better fit and the Hawks did little to help them out.

here in indianapolis since 1998 the former home of the colts WFBQ dedicated 9 hours of game day to Colts coverage. which since has continued with the colts move back to WIBC/WLHK-FM with 9 hours of game day coverage. and i think WDVE in pittsburgh gives up a bunch of its Steelers game day from its rock format for Steelers football. and probly other NFL Teams with FM Flagships gives up at least 7 hours or more of gameday coverage to there teams
