Seahawks on FM

Wow cowboys. I have listened for a couple of weeks and it does not sound good :p The big ole beauty of AM is that it covers up the bad microphones, the noise, the weak voices. This cowboy is glad t hat it is KIRO-AM that is staying sports and the FM is going to be the news-talk station :-X On FM the locker room interviews can't be heard, the talent are off mic and the scratchiness that comes with remotes is not listenable to this cowboy. Good move to keep sports on AM 8)
Where will the 60's, 70's format go ??? This cowboy thinks the likely candidates are KWJZ or MOVIN. Would be a smart move by Sandusky to protect WARM. Jazz is over as a format in the PPM so what better move or maybe to a gold based AC. MOVIN is declining as KISS gets better so that works too. If not I betcha KNBQ or Funky Monkey makes to big ole move. Gold audience is southend anyway. ;D
So here's a topic. When KIRO-AM goes all sports who wins the battle with KJR-AM ??? KIRO has the stronger signal, the Mariners, the Seahawks, the Sounders. Maybe it is KJR-AM that goes back to the Oldies ::)

The FM audio quality also surprised me. While I didn't think the feed from the stadium was awful, I did notice that many of the spots sounded like they were either coming down a low bit rate ISDN or were recorded at a low bit rate.

Other than that, it was nice to hear on FM. It came in when I was in the tunnel. That's always nice.

No Oldies on KWJZ! I want smooth jazz! Make it 92.5 MOViN!

I find it humorous the way KIRO is promoting "you can hear us in the tunnels" as a key feature and reason to listen on FM. That's a benefit for those who commute on I-90, and where else? Battery street maybe? How bout instead KIRO, you start tweaking the lame processing. KUOW is a much better sounding station.

I've never liked sports on FM. The drop-outs, multipathing, distortion caused by the rapid fades common to FM in urban and rural areas make it so you can miss the most important part of a call. I can't tell how many times when I lived in the midwest listening to Kansas City Chiefs games on FM...I missed the "touchdown" due to signal fade out. An AM that was 4 hours away had a better and more consistant signal. The only benefits to having it on FM is if you are in a building that the FM does penetrate but the AM doesn't, and as long as no one moves around to0 much..or to0 many computers are on....etc. Also TakeItFromMe is right, FM will often show off the imperfections of the broadcast equipment. AM can mask that...to a point. I can't even imagine how that's going to do in the mountainous terrain of Northwest Washington.

mamma hasn't checked out this board in ages. I can tell you that MOVIN will NOT be going oldies or anything else. Unlike most of the market revenue is up and ratings remain very strong. KBKS had a fluko month but MOVIN still tied or beat them in most demos especially 25-54 ladies and adults and pounded on most of the rest of the market. On the four book MOVIN is the deal and just wait. Check out the personal persons meter PPM in LA nad SF and you see massive jumps for MOVIN. In SF it is top five in the ya ya demos. PPM proves what mamma has been sayin all along it is the format of the future. Have been reading throgh the threads on why Bone A ville switched and this lady is laughin. Haven't heard it and have no plans to listen to the simulcast of a statoin t hat had no ratings as an AM anymore. You think putting it on Fm means it gets better. ya ya funny. The reason people under 50 and women don't listen to AM is there is nothing for them to listen to. Does that mean crappy KOMO-AM goes on to STAR-FM. Ohhhh boyyyyy the ratings will soar. How about KTTH on KISW. Yep that's the answer. Women and those under 50 will listen to AM when there is something worth listening to. When will you boys in radio understand. It isn't about the am modulation or fm modulation or hd or whatever. It is about the ya ya factor on the air. Good programming wins and that is why mamma knows best!!!! This board is always good for a laugh or five.

My life is complete mamma is back. The sad part is I actually, kind of, almost, in a small way, not much, but a little, agree with her. Bonneville has had success putting AM/FM News and Talk stations on the air. I think being on an AM and FM signal helps because each has weaknesses overcome by the other. FM comes into offices and tunnels better. A strong AM is less affected by terrain. I must agree that in the end good programming is more important from a ratings and sales perspective. As Bonneville saw in Phoenix just being on FM doesn't mean much if the programming is weak. My guess is Bonneville is banking on KIRO-AM as an all sports station bringing in big revenue anchored by the Mariners, Seahawks and Sounders. If the FM can hold the news audience and revenue the move will be smart.

As far as "Movin" a success in the PPM (that's Personal People Meter by the way) the post is all fiction. In LA, MOVIN was not a factor at all. In SF it was marginally better. The bigger surprise is that in LA and in SF the Soft AC station was number one. Same for Philadelphia, NY and Houston. There is a pattern and it has nothing to do with Movin, a format that is not doing what it's name implies.

Portable People Meter it is. (the parenthetical comment was meant to be satire aimed at the previous post)
I am curious if others see common threads in the PPM numbers released in LA, NY, SF, Houston, Philadelphia outside of the obvious
AC lean and trouble for AM bands. I can tell you on the sales front the numbers are wreaking havoc with CPP. Radio will have to be smart to deal with the pressure to drop rate, even among the top stations.

Drop loser KQMV and bring on the oldies! Grab some listeners! It's been a looooooong time 92.5!

KIRO doing an AWFUL job on FM, they sound horrible! Embarrasing! Scandal! Big boy stations can't deal with mono FM in 2008? Future is not bright!

The Seahawks will be heard in Portland on 95.5 "The Game" starting this season along with the Blazers. I'm looking forward to hear how it sounds.
