Sean Hannity calls smooth jazz "elevator music"

Well...that's the last person I'd expect to hear talking about smooth jazz, but he did tonight on FOX News' Hannity Show (or at least some writer for Hannity wrote it, anyhow). Seems there was some sort of recent "decision" by Nancy Pelosi and others to remove the patriotic music that callers hear when phoning the US Government and replace it with, as Sean Hannity put it, "smooth jazz elevator music". I heard that and just cringed. More of that idiotic nonsense of equating smooth jazz to "elevator music". We have to hear the "elevator music" comments everywhere, and now we have a national news network endorsing that kind of thinking. What's worse...he decided to reinforce that idea, referring to smooth jazz as "elevator music" a second time during the story. According to FOX, the patriotic music was put back into place after numerous complaints about it being scrapped. I'm like...ok, if the vast majority want the patriotic music, fine. Just keep the "elevator music" commments to yourself. Thanks, Sean... ::)

I would have to say that the most patriotic tune I have heard that even comes close was Branford Marsalis and Bruce Hornsby's beautiful arrangement of The Star Spangled Banner that I heard live in Baltimore at Camden Yards the night Cal Ripken broke the great Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played streak in September 1995. It ABSOLUTELY sent chills down my spine. Very moving rendition.

Off topic, but in trying to track down a You Tube video of the Camden Yards performance, I came across a little factoid that I had not known before re: Bruce Hornsby. He actually played piano in Bill Evans' "If Only In Your Dreams," which purely by coincidence, I had selected this week for my Timerider show (1994) that aired earlier today...LOL Not only is it by far my favorite Bill Evans' cut, but remains to this day one of my all-time favorite contemporary jazz cuts.

While I don't agree with Sean Hannity's politics, I'm afraid I'm going to have to side with him on this one. Based on several smooth jazz radio stations I've heard in recent years, the "elevator music" tag unfortunately applies. That makes ME cringe, especially when I know it sounds better than that.

That Bruce Hornsby/Branford Marsalis rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" was featured in the Ken Burns "Baseball" documentary that aired on PBS in 1994. There is a radio station in Jacksonville, IL (Full Service AC-formatted WLDS) that uses it in their nightly sign-off. I think its a great version, and he and Marsalis hit that one out of the park. And what better place to hear that live but in Baltimore?

Hornsby has a knack of using chord structures that are atypical from other pop musicians (he reminds me of Thelonious Monk). He's also versatile enough to work with musicians as diverse as the Grateful Dead, Pat Metheny, and Ricky Skaggs. I saw him perform live in 2006, and elevator music, it wasn't.

Nice to see someone with an appreciation for history these days, spirit! Every time I mention Baltimore it is as if I am uttering a 4-letter word, "Murder capital of the US, highest teenage pregnancy rate, you stole the Browns (sorry Bill--still feel bad about that one, but the league left us with no choice). The next time you visit B'more, a trip to Ft. McHenry is a must. I lived in nearby Locust Point as a young child, and could easily walk there. When you tour the star-shaped fort, look at the sprawning Inner Harbor, and think that Francis Scott Key wrote our national anthem witnessing a heroic battle that helped change the course of history while our nation's capital was literally getting burned to the ground is quite amazing. And when you do you visit, make a trip down I-95 to Smithsonian's Museum of American History where the original Star-Spangled Banner has been fully restored and is proudly displayed. Quite a sight.
 
Well, it could be called a modern version of elevator music...particularly when there was lack of innovation. Many if not most "Smooth Jazz" stations played way too many remakes for my taste, which to me showed lack of innovation. There were many musicians which played such music that went overlooked because some half-wit PD, GM or consultant was hell bent on playing non-original material.
 
Please define "remakes."

I enjoy "smooth jazz, especially hearing "familiar" songs - modernized...not some spacey "new composition" that I can't get any feeling from or have any connection with.
 
For hell's sake, JAZZ and its subgenre of SMOOTH JAZZ ARE PATRIOTIC! This is frankly the only art form that was totally born in the United States. Some could argue country music, but it has too many ties to Irish jigs, and modern country takes a lot of elements from the blues, rock that were formed out of Jazz. Listening to jazz is patriotic, and for that I'll say something incendiary (even though I respect those who believe to the contrary), LISTENING TO HANNITY, especially after that remark, IS NOT!

Hey Mike Savage likes Classic jazz and classical music. I noticed Mike Savage back in May and June 2009 played some Classic Jazz and Classical right when Savage was making fun of Hannity's Fake Patriotism

Last I heard Sean Hannity his special guest around July 4 was Lee Greenwood. An untalented mope who has made a career off a song that for whatever reason most take as an American Classic. Do you ever see this guy anywhere except on the 4th, 9/11 or the Jerry Lewis Telethon? Please.

@majaman78 - Someone who gets paid way too much for his opinion and just one of many blowhards in the media on the far Right and the far Left who are only serving to divide this country when it desperately needs to unite. At least we have our music to keep us sane and united. :)

@1316wwood - Jerry Lewis Telethon?...LOL A tremendous cause, no doubt, but I have to agree with you about LG. I don't doubt his patriotism, and maybe he's a real nice guy, but I can think of very few in my lifetime who have gotten more mileage out of one song.

1316, I have a question for you.

What do YOU do for a living?? Mr. Greenwood can sit HOME in Seveirville, Tennessee and go to his mailbox monthly in his pajamas, to collect his (quite handsome) ASCRAP check. Then he certainly tours, and just the county fair circuit would be a "goldmine" for this guy.

What's wrong with "mileage on one song?" HOW MUCH MONEY did YOU make this month for a bit of work you did around 1980? Just asking.
