Sean McLaughlin to KPHO?

There is word going around that Weatherman Sean may be headed back to Phoenix from NYC. This time to team up with Kent and Catherine at KPHO. Can't confirm it, but if true that could prove a pretty potent combo for 5.

Good move for KPHO and probably for McLaughlin as well (somehow I never saw him as a good fit for NYC).

Who would he replace though? Mike Harvey and Jeff Kelly seem competent at their respective positions. I'm not crazy about Bob Jeswald, but even assuming that management agreed with me, would McLaughlin go to 5 to take the weekend spot? Any rumors about anyone looking to leave KPHO?

Over on tvspy.com, they have been saying that Mike Harvey has been let go but has agreed to work until his successor (Sean?) arrives.

It's official!

Phoenix, AZ (July 13, 2006) – KPHO CBS 5 announced today that veteran broadcaster Sean McLaughlin will return to Phoenix to multiple roles including Chief Meteorologist, news anchor and reporter for CBS 5 News.

The announcement was made by Steven D. Hammel, CBS 5 Vice President and General Manager. "I am thrilled that Sean decided to return to Phoenix. His dedication to excellence and to his huge fan base here will serve our viewers well. Sean's re-uniting with Kent Dana will be a big plus for the quality that viewers have come to expect with CBS 5 News," said Hammel.

McLaughlin will join the CBS 5 News team early this fall once his duties as MSNBC weekday Chief Meteorologist and Sunday Meteorologist on NBC’s “Weekend Today” are wrapped up.

Old KPNX news-folks never die. They just go to work at Channel 5.

What'll KPHO get from KPNX next? NBC? ;D

KPHO = People who couldn't take it any longer at KPNX!

I wasn't around when Scene was in Phoenix, but I was totally unimpressed with his skills at the network level. I always compared him to Joe Witte and wished Joe had stayed with NBC.

Another non-diverse hiring at KPHO!

What do you mean by "non-diverse"? Sean McLaughlin is quite different than Mike Harvey.

All the Irish in New York probably kicked his butt for him pronouncing it "seen"

Probably. :D But his twin brother is named "Shawn". It's an Iowa thing - yous guys wouldn't understand.

Where's Mike Harvey?
Has he been given his walking papers so soon?

I'm attempting to not read into his absence, but it looks more like the treatment that John Overall received when Chambo was hired. There one morning and gone the next.

Just wondering.

Who is this Steve Garry that is doing weather on KPHO?

If I waded through the crap about KPHO's diversity on the numerous posts, I thought that Mike Harvey was departing the station and Sean is the new Chief Met (along with other anchor/reporting duties) and that Jeff Kelly was staying on weekday mornings and Bob Jeswald would hold down the weekends.

Tonight, on the evening newscasts, all with the standard intros that had Kent, Diana/Catherine and "weather with Chief Meteorologist, Mike Harvey"; Steve Garry is on the air doing the "breaking news" portions of the storm that blew through the valley and the regular weather hits. Is Garry a permanent addition and where does he fit in the final lineup once Mc arrives?

Who knows? But I'm sorry that you think diversity is "crap". Your attitude is what is wrong with society today. No respect of people from backgrounds other than your own.

Randy Kollins on the Weatherwatch tonight (7/21)

Another new face has popped up on the CBS-5 Weatherwatch. Randy Kollins handled the weather chores for this evenings newscasts including the thunderstorm that blew in from the northeast.

Is somebody else leaving the CBS-5 Weather Center? Is KPHO having an "on-air" audition for a replacement with Kollins tonight and Steve Garry earlier in the week?

...and will either of these two have an opportunity to host the 7pm-10pm show on KFYI?

Will David Leibowitz get a shot at guessing the weather on KPHO?

:)

And yet, Meredith isn't just throwing money at the wind, either. The people they're getting have the one thing KPHO so deperately needed: credibility. The high-profile names that they're bringing in are already well-known and well-respected in the market, and in Kent Dana's case, many believe put out to pasture too soon. Contrast that with KNXV's habit of bringing in mostly unknowns, with no connection to the valley viewer, something KPHO used to do.

Makes you wonder was there a bidding war for Seeeeen. KPNX-12 could use another local weather guesser to support their 24 weather-plus station and to give poor Caribe a break.

Also, did he miss being a big fish in a semi-big pond? Did the bright lights of the Big City scare him back to the desert? We will probably get the stock answer: "I missed the Valley. This is my home."
