Great article about variety hits. Funny isn't it? How in the first paragraph, every market Sean mentioned - with the exception of L.A. - is winning with a variety hits presentation that works *without* Jack-FM's smarmy bloviation. The downfall to the current Jack-FM approach will be in presentation. Over the next few years, radio will discover what a few markets already have. That Jack's jukebox-hero smarminess lacks the staying power to make him a long term radio commodity. Jack-FM is nothing more that a retread of an approach that has failed time and time again.
And while Sean expresses the hope that radio will someday find a presentation for variety hits "that works," I'll suggest that in many of the markets mentioned, radio already has. The Charlies and the Peaks and the Arches of variety hits will remain. While Jack - unless there's a strong shift in presentation - will be left for the dust bin of radio history. The comment from Beau Phillips says it best. "Jack has no soul."
