SEATAC PPM for April

KISW and Warm lead the books. KIRO continues to lead KOMO, I am concerned about that. KOMO continues to drop.

I don't know about anyone else, but the more talk KOMO runs, the less I listen to their news programming.
That's because when I tune to a news station, that's what I want, _not_ talk.
Six hours middays, talk. Midnight to four, talk replays. (If I don't want to hear the talk to begin with, I certainly won't listen to a replay.)
Talk replays till 6 Sunday morning, then I think it's Perspective, so news starts late on Sundays.
The replays start earlier on Sunday nights, too.
I understand why KOMO would do this, but habits are weird things. If I get out of the habit of listening during some hours, I'm less likely to listen during others.
And I'm a radio geek. I generally know when to listen for the programming I prefer.
What about the casual listener, who just knows that when he wants a news update, he's less and less likely to get it?

It's true... as they stray farther and farther from their original plan, the listeners find other choices. Add to that, a few key on-air players have departed since the first of the year adding to the discomfort. Less news, business and sports... more talk, and they're down about 2 points since January.
They hired a new PD about a month ago but haven't heard any indication that the ship is back on course. Even the number of news stories seems to have declined. I still like the fact that the traffic reports remain consistent.

To help put things in perspective, let's visit some important demos, as opposed the 6+ & 12+ numbers, which are rarely used as by advertisers and aren't the best reflection of success. So, in April:

the top 25-54 adult stations in order (one of the primary ad buying demos)

KISW
KIRO FM
KKWF
KJAQ
KZOK

and for a slightly younger look, the 18-34 adult top stations in order

KISW
KBKS
KUBE
KQMV
KKWF

6+ and overall numbers mean nothing, which is why arbitron allows those to be released. What matters is 6a-7p and the market rarely changes. KISW is number one in men/adults in just about every demo 6a-7p. KPLZ number one in women 6a-7p in every demo. KIRO, KJR, KUOW, KWFF are your other players. Several stations drive numbers 55+ like KRWM, KOMO. Several stations drive numbers on weekends and nights like the CHR's and KZOK.

In mornings it is all about KISW, KIRO and KUOW for men and KPLZ, KJR and KKWF for women. 9-12 months these stations win.
Used to be a lot more exciting in the diary days when a stations jumped up and down!
