INFINITY Talk KPTK-A/SEATTLE adds JONES/WYD's STEPHANIE MILLER for mornings, bumping AIR AMERICA RADIO's "MORNING SEDITION" to 3-5a PT live, reports the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER's BILL VIRGIN. The station is also adding THOM HARTMANN's syndicated show for 9a-Noon and moving AAR's AL FRANKEN to afternoons on tape delay; AAR's RANDI RHODES gets bumped to evenings 6-10p. JONES/P1's ED SCHULTZ stays put Noon-3p and AAR's MIKE MALLOY holds 10p-1a.

-------------

Morning Sedation has improved a little lately, but there was only one direction for it to go. Too little, too late. If Steph does well, look for more stations to bail and for MS to join Unfiltered in talk show heaven.

I agree... I personally think Morning Sedition isn't long for this world. Stephanie Miller is the best of the non-AAR shows out there.

Miller will work for West Coast stations.
What would East Coast stations air in AM drive in place of Sedition?

Morning Sedition is overmodulating

> Morning Sedation has improved a little lately
I noticed that, but only a little improvement. The delivery was always breakneck speed, breathless and at crisis volume. Those characters really needed to unmodulate their voice a little, but I'm afraid it will never happen. All in all, I consider the show unlistenable.

I'd sure like to hear a conservative like Doug Stephan on in the morning, he'd be a great addition to AAR and appeal to the working class.<P ID="signature">______________

AM 1090 Seattle Takes a Big Risk...

Thanks for the posting on AM 1090 Seattle. Air America affiliate AM 1090 Seattle is now taking a big risk by tape delaying the "traditional" Air America talkers (Franken, Rhodes, Malloy, etc.?).

At ANY time, any of the other stations with "comparable daytime signal reach" over the "most densely populated areas of Seattle, Bellevue, Federal Way, and Tacoma" could offer to Air America to take the traditional lineup LIVE AND IN ITS ENTIRETY (Mark & Mark 6-9, Franken 9-12, Rhodes 12-4, Garafallo 4-7, Malloy 7-10). Already, AM 1090 has begun tape delaying Robert F. Kennedey and Laura Flanders on Saturday.

Candidates could include Clear Channel's Fox Sports Radio 850 (10kW/1kW), Sandusky's Alternative Talk 1150 (10kW/6W), Sandusky's Adult Standards 880 (50kW/10kW), Radio Disney's 1250 (5kW), and Crista Ministry's 630 (5kW,2.5kW)..

It's a big risk for AM 1090 Seattle. On the other hand, Stephanie Miller, Hartmann, Schultz will do very well on 1090 6am-3pm.

And a local show 6am-9am would do even better, such as Frank Blair and Audrey Chase now on 1180 KLAY / Tacoma, who are moderate in perspective, VERY familiar with local Democratic party political issues, and also very entertaining.

Al Franken and Randi Rhodes After Dark in winter...

It's also a problem since in November sunset time is ~430, ~415 in December, and ~430 in January...the AM 1090 pattern changes significantly for some areas even though it is 50kW day and night...

If you are driving home FROM Seattle afternoons east on I-90, south on 161/167, or southeast on 164 or 410, say goodbye to AM 1090 reception until 730-8am the next morning.

For the two top Air America hosts (Franken, Rhodes) to not be heard in winter (since tape delayed) by residents of the RAPIDLY GROWING suburbs of Issaquah, North Bend, Covington, east Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Maple Valley, Enumclaw, Buckley, Bonney Lake, LAke Tapps, Puyallup, Edgewood, Graham, Eatonville, and suburbs in unincorporated NE Pierce/SE King???

If they are going to do this, then Infiniti at least needs to stream.

Instead of Stephanie - A Local show for 1090...Frank Blair and Audrey Chase...

It's too bad that Infiniti made such sweeping programming changes and failed to include a live, local morning show, such as Frank Blair and Audrey Chase, currently on 1180 KLAY Lakewood/Tacoma/Federal Way.

Frank Blair and Audrey Chase are political activists on the radio from the left here in the Puget Sound area, just as Kirby Wilbur and Mike Siegel are political activists on the radio from the right in this region.

Three local politically passionate broadcasters morning drive from all perspectives would be better than two, and the addition of another syndicated program (Stephanie Miller) adds virtually nothing to the *current* AM 1090 lineup. I doubt that the ratings will improve over Morning Sedition.

A live, local, liberal show on 1090 with local news, weather, and sports could give AM talkers KIRO,KTTH,KVI,KOMO a run for their money 6a-10a.

Finally, we're talking about market #14...A market this large needs a local morning show. As Maloney and others have pointed out, Air America stations with local morning shows can do better than those without...

Bill Press or (GASP!!) a local show

Despite the huge population growth on the Eastside, let's look at the psychographics out there too. We're talking maybe 500,000 warm bodies and probably about 3 people who dare to listen to AAR's centrist propaganda near their homes. These people have families, and it would be really sad if something should happen to them just because Mom got caught out of step with the neo-con deathmarch.

Great idea. And I wonder if that stick in the mud, Ichabod Caine would slip in a little Supertramp on his show for all us KMPS listeners who really don't like so much country music.

Or maybe even

(wait for it)

MORNING SEDITION. Somehow I don't see how moving back to the wee hours on KPTK is going to blow up Morning Sedition. Remember, it was only on in the morning drive spot for a couple of months anyway.

Yes the communities that I mentioned are "red" areas, but there are plenty of "blue" Democrats within these areas.

They are increasingly "blue" as young families move here for cheaper home prices in new home communties, leaving the expensive Seattle/Bellevue/Renton areas.

Any station whose signal reaches some of these communities at night PLUS Seattle could get clearance from Air America for live broadcasting of Franken, Rhodes, Garafallo, Malloy, and Sedition in an instant.

I would not be surprised if at some point Sandusky's alternative talk 1150, or Sandusky's Adult Standards 880, both who have good coverage east of Bellevue at night, take tbe "traditional" Air America lineup.

Y'all Don't Get It

The big story here is NOT nighttime signal patterns in Seattle.

The big story is a major market station is bailing on Morning Sedition. And that station is also bumping Franken for Thom Hartmann. Randi Rhodes gets bumped yet again (dog bites man). Look for more changes to come: changes at stations in other markets; changes at Air America. Actually, it may have already begun.

Apparently Seattlites with all those trees have trouble seeing forests.

Just because my neighbor's dog yaps every time he sees me doesn't mean he's actually saying anything.

KGO, SF's Bernie Ward is the best lib talker. Bill Press is the best syndicated lib talker. Stephanie's funny, but just a little too glib.

Correct...it is the new syndication model...

OK! :)
But I think I have an analogy to this one:
The AM radio signals have vision problems as do the citizens...most of the the 50kW transmitters are near salt water due to increased conductivity of salt water (Puget Sound)...

But once the signals hit the shore and the TREES :), they also CAN'T SEE through quaternary gravel sediments (poor ground conductivity)...

If it was not for the 50kW station pattern changes at night due to the limitations from the skywave, then we wouldn't have nearly as significant propagation problems to the fast growing inland suburbs at night...

Some stations operating at 50kW at night have greater restricted nightime power to the NE,E,SE, than others.

AM talkers KOMO,KIRO,KTTH,KVI have better nightime signals compared to KPTK,KIXI,KKNW,KGNW,KLAY,KCIS.
