Earlier I posted about the future of Seattle AM radio and now a couple of humble thoughts about FM radio. Apologize that much of this is taken from comments on the LA Boards over the last couple of months, but it applies here. FM radio future is bright for the following reasons:
1. PPM favors FM. AM stations will niche to stay alive and serve smaller audiences with great success. FM stations will become powerhouses and battle each other. FM will drive the rate for the market.
2. FM stations will become a two-tier proposition. The first tier will be FM stations that are more like the full-service stations of old. Established morning shows, news, big promotions and wide appeal music genres. The second Tier will be automated flankers that generate cash and margin. We already see this transformation.
Seattle will have two or three clear powerhouse 25-54 FM stations when the PPM dust settles. In LA it is KIIS, KLVE, KOST and KROQ, in NY it is Z-100, WLTW and WCBS, in Dallas it is KLNO, KHKS, KPLX and in Philly it is WBEB and WDAS. Varied formats with a common factor of heritage morning shows and wide appeal. The remaining stations in the clusters have trimmed staffs and serve as niche flankers. What will the top three or four 25-54 powerhouses be in Seattle? That is anyone's guess, but I can tell you the parameter of FM radio looks very bright in the coming years, in my humble view. Investment into the top powerhouses will increase, fueled by automating the flankers and using them to bring in rate on buys.
