Seattle Mornings

Our agency just got the breakouts from the Fall book. It made me think a bit.
The top stations in morning drive for men and women 25-54 remain unchanged. I have always preached Seattle loves its morning hosts, but this time it is a bit odd with all the change in the market. Last Fall Bob Rivers/KZOK and Howard Stern/KISW were number one and two in men. This year Bob Rivers/KZOK and BJ Shea/KISW are one and two. The morning show host at KISW has changed but the position hasn't. For women it is the same story. Last year KRWM (Christmas music), Kent and Alan and Ichabod were the top three. This year it is KRWM (Christmas Music) Kent and Alan and Ichabod. This is with a direct attack to KMPS by WOLF and to KPLZ by MOVIN. Are people so hooked to morning drive in this city that even if there is direct competition or a talent change they stay with the same stations? I know this market rarely changes, but this surprised even me.

As far as the the breakdown for men go, those numbers should come as no surprise. Other than a lame Mitch in the Morning on KJR and a struggling Carolla on a station in the toilet, BJ and Rivers have NO competition when it comes to males. They will remain in the top 2 for many books to come.

"In the toilet?"

Face it, they aren't what they once were. Carolla stinks, No-Name was better in the mornings then he is now on Mid-days. Lazlo should NOT be on the air either. Rosetti and Harms kept some sort of alternative "edge" when they could.

I think the one thing that this board can agree on is that the END is in the toilet. They aren't even top five in their target demo (18-34) and literally do not exist in any demographic 25+. There are no stations left aiming at men 25-54 except KZOK and KISW A few years ago there was a vital END, THE BUZZ, KROCK...all are either gone or dying.
Only KISW and KZOK are left. Isn't that the big opening for radio in this market? On the female side of things, WOLF nipped KMPS mornings in the last trend and I expect a change there. MOVIN will launch a new morning show soon which should quickly knock off KPLZ's mornings. KRWM will always do well with Christmas music in Fall, but the morning show is not a factor in any other book, so the fact they win fall is pretty meaningless. Yes the male morning shows will stay the same due to no competition. I would suspect next Fall, MOVIN and WOLF will knock off Ichabod and Kent and Alan/.

So Lisa, (aka Mamma), how confident are you in your prediction? Ready to put your money where your mouth is? And I'm not talking about money per se', but something far more enjoyable that all on this board can enjoy.

Although the order might not have changed, especially with the women demos. Look at the TSL. Even women aren't listening to Ichabod, for example, for as long as they used to. Many of his listeners are on the older end as well. That does leave room, in my opinion, for competitors.

Uhm, the SuperSecret link to her myspace Url? ;D

Generally aren't mornings a workplace listener crowd, I mean most listeners are at work or on their way to work when these shows are on and I remember from my years in the offices and cubicals that we rarely changed the station around the workplace ???

I don't know if that has an impact or not but it seems to me when a group of people listens to a station they are less likely to change the channel than a single person.
