Attended Radio Day on Friday. Good turnout, reps and managers from every station group there. Quite a few agencies, although not as many as I expected.
I thought overall it was one of the better presentations I'd been to in awhile, it seemed to be targeted as much to 'radio's own' (the reps) as it was to 'the clients'. Rivers was great as MC, I got there a bit late (traffic was terrible) so only caught then end of Hoffman. Monroe was pretty dry in my view, Copacino great as always, David Field was the one everyone seemed to be waiting for, he did a somewhat predictable though effective presentation on 'why radio is still viable" I'm guessing parts of it were from his "wall street pitch' he seems to hold some very optimistic (read higher than I've heard from anyone else in the radio or TV business) expectations as to radio's (revenue) ability to rebound from the current recession. It was good in that it put radio in perspective with other media and showed that radio still really does have it's place as a viable media. I thought Sam Pond stole the show with his almost entirely pre-taped speech on radios creativity. I personally enjoyed his and Copacino's presentations the best they really did a great job of reminding everyone the power of radio as a story telling media and how relatively cheap and quick radio ads are to do (the power is in the idea).
Overall it was a good show of force hadn't seen radio tell it's story for quite a while. As Steve West put it afterwards " I don't think they knew how good it was going to be'.
