Seattle-Tacoma PPM ratings November 2024

Is three a crowd? I don't know what KPNW can do to turn things around, but it's not looking good.

Seattle/Tacoma
KPNW is doing all of the right things. It’s too bad their effort isn’t being reflected in this list. I do believe that they should stay the course. Go into next summer firing on all cylinders during a time where country is stronger. Objectively, they sound better than 100.7 now.

I genuinely don’t understand how KZOK is still putting up numbers like this. After the drama they’ve had with the morning show, I thought there’d be more of a drop. It seems like Sarah is still there (doing the best she can), but they definitely need to give her some help. The rest of the programming is pretty bland. Basically a “control+c” version of a generic classic rock station. Any input from the personalities is text in to win promos.

KJEB sounds great though. Good variety, and local personalities in the morning and afternoon. Even when they’re running Martha Quinn’s national show, she’s constantly giving listeners 110%. Too bad that can’t translate a little more to 102.5.

Wonder what post election numbers will look like come January book with KUOW, KIRO and even KNWN up? KRWM certainly benefiting from KSWD leaving AC, and this WARM growth is prior to Christmas music. KRWM may be number one post Christmas as well with no AC competitor? Emma seeing some movement 25-54 but way too early. Definitely room for just one country in Seattle as KPLZ and KPNW fade. They all look pretty weak 25-54. For the December and holiday books KRWM and KCMS are poised for really big numbers I suspect with KSWD and KPLZ no longer playing Christmas music and the election bumps for News/Talk over Tis the holiday season. KZOK surprises me as well with all the change.

I did not hear the Wolf when I was in the market last month, but did hear KPNW and was profoundly bored. Then again, I am bored by any station that decides to only run elements every other song, which is what KPNW was doing that Thursday afternoon. Here's another question more about radio in general than the market in particular, wouldn't a station want to have as much advertising as possible at the times when the most people are listening? It seems odd to me that so many stations are running a long block of commercial free music in the heart of afternoon drive. That was the other thing I noticed about 98.9, no commercials in the 75 minutes of that aircheck. It's one of the reasons I don't like to record in afternoon drive anymore, though those clocks aren't always synced up.

Seeing KING FM go from a 3.1 to a 4.0 makes me question this entire reporting period.
Agreed. This station, perhaps outside of the holiday book, should provide a great control group. Not like a new morning show or a big promotion is going to be there to swing the needle that much, you know?

Bach ain't walking through that door, son.

Maybe KING-FM got some KSWD listeners? If the #5 station stops playing Soft AC, those listeners went somewhere. Some went to KWRM but some chose another soft music station.

1. Take 6+ numbers with a grain of salt.
2. KPLZ is aiming for a different market than either KPNW or the Wolf.
3. KZOK seems to have a strong floor in listeners despite a generic playlist and losing a strong morning program.

Debate...

Still no word what happened with BJ, probably can't say anything yet due to non-compete clause. KPNW is up against a well-established juggernaut in KKWF, country folks had to go somewhere after a legacy station (KMPS) gets nuked, hopefully those call letters are being retained in another market. KPLZ seems to want to get some of those old KMPS listeners back, it'll be a slog, but we shall see. Jeff Connell who's programming it is a pretty brilliant programmer (I personally would've gone Rock to take on KISW, but that's just me) Speaking of, KISW seems to be flat.

It's getting to be exceedingly rare for an Active Rock station to be successful. I would say that a format competitor is out of the question!

6+ really does mean little. 25-54 it is always a battle for number one between KQMV and KISW, they tied this book. They are your market leaders book after book. KNDD has also had a recent run in the top 5 though you wouldn't guess any of this from 6+. WOLF usually sits around number 5-7. KJEB, KBKS,KRWM usually round out the top five depending on the month. While KZOK, KING, and the News/Talk stations look impressive 6+ the numbers lean 55+. Seattle remains a VERY consistent market in the core demos.

Thanks for sharing that. Even though KISW looked a little weak in this book, I figured they were doing a bit better. They seem to consistently be one of the top performers regardless of what the 6+ numbers indicate. Good to see KJEB doing well too.

I’m not sure how I would explain KZOK leaning 55+ still. A huge chunk of the playlist is 90’s centric rock (but usually Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.). Those groups are often heard on 107.7.

Re: KING. Remember April 2020, when they suddenly rocketed to #3 6+? It was my understanding back then that the reason that happened was because those that listened to KING didn't change their listening habits as much as those listening to just about every other station in the market. As listening returned, the numbers for King returned to normal. That being said though, where are the listeners? When I gained access to the audience numbers through Radio Insight, it seems that there were several stations that regularly showed above 500K, and even a couple around 600K. The last few months though, 500K has been hard to find, with only two stations showing that number, and only one this month. KRWM is showing 508K, and that's it.

It's my understanding that the decline in cume is happening everywhere. It's a reflection of the declining number of people listening to AM/FM radio. Its like a shrinking pie, and everyone's slice keeps getting smaller.
