Seattles Best ROCK

Anyone sick of reading about the last trend? Okay KMPS is not dead yet, Ichabod, Bob Rivers and Kent and Alan still have jobs and no one is going to flip format or be declared king of the radio hill based on a trend or two. GOT IT.

Something completely overlooked on this Board is the resurgence of KISW. While most station that lost Stern died, KISW remains top of the heap in the male demos, challenging KZOK. BJ has been the number one morning show in Seattle for men multiple times and is second only to Rivers. All day long the station ROCKS.

Isn't about time for a ROCK station to return to Seattle. KISW is part talk and ROCK, but I believe there is room for a full-time rock station, especially in mornings where if you love rock, you only have talk.

New discussion? Whatdaya say?

Amen Takeitfromme. KISW looks great and BJ has established himself as a true player in mornings. My number two buy behind Bob Rivers on male business. Number two on 18-34 business behind T-Man. The show is coming up on one year and numbers are impressive. The loss of Stern, Robin and John and Andy Savage left a perfect hole for BJ to fill.

Is there room for a rock station that plays rock all day long? Absolutely. It is the missing format in Seattle right now. I have to listen to my I-Pod in the morning if I want good rock. I'd love a rock station as a 30 something male and as a non-talk option for morning male media buys.

Good post!

I third that! Agree 100% and I'm not a big Rock fan. Seattle has always been known as a Alternative and Rock town. The End is over time for fresh ideas.

Hey. Finally a post we can all agree on for a change. Seattle is overdue for a FM Rock station that really ROCKS all day long. A MOVIN for the Metal set. I love it.

A ton of credit for KISW's great numbers has to go to Dave Richards. For years the End would dominate KISW in the ratings and Richards began incorporating alot of core bands/songs you would normally hear on the End. Now if you glance at KISW's playlist, other than an ocassional song by AC/DC or a new active rock track, alot of the music is what you used to hear on the End. He knew that an active rock/alternative hybrid would eventually be the way to go and if you look around the country such as the buzz in Houston or the buzz in Atlanta, these are the only types of stations pulling in good numbers now compared to a station like the End. Hell the Atlanta station had caught and overtaken heritage 99x in just over a year by using a harder active rock/alternative approach.

Plus Richards decided to go local in the Morning with BJ and that is working out great. How is the End doing with a syndicated Carolla?

Marko,

I sure hope you aren't referring to the big show of Lazlo and his wife! Quite stellar numbers for the buzz in KC in the summer 06' book just before he left. The suits in charge at the End will give Lazlo one full book to make a splash and when that doesn't happen, the plug will be pulled on the End.

From being on the down end of Generation-X and only being able to listen to the stations via the Internet, KISW is the best ROCK station! BAR NONE!

KNDD is just trying to repeat the same trend in music that created the stations fame in the 90's with almost a college radio/punk/emo underground music list. Throw in the occasional Nirvana tune and you have a typical hour of music.

KZOK is Old Guy Rock!? I'm not in the demo!

KJR-FM hardly broadcasts in stereo from what people tell me. The stream sounds like they re-recorded the music to the automation system from reel-to-reel decks. Once again, I know the music, not in the demo.

I live in a place where 70's and 80's Rock is pounded all day long on 2 different stations. They fight over a 12 share? The Alternative station here wants to be like KISW but has to lean more towards KNDD's playlist. They recently had Mancow on in Morning Drive?! Gave monikers to their jocks like "The BLANK-ITY BLANK Experience" and "The Reverend BLANK-ITY BLANK". A KISW Ripoff with No Talent?! Yeah, that's what I want to hear!

So, If I listen to local radio, I have to float between 3 stations to get to hear the music I want to hear?? That SUCKS!

KISW plays a broad mix of the most successful bands and music from the last 40 years of rock music. I'm one of those people who like to listen Led Zeppelin, AC/DC without having to hear any Lynyrd Skynyrd, Neil Young or Journey. I like it when one minute, you have a Pink Floyd song then "Cigaro" from System of a Down comes blasting in my speakers. Anthems from the past and new acts all mixed together.

I like hearing about established bands but I always want to know what is coming out with the "new" edge of the active rock scene. KISW does a good job of mixing the old with a selected mixture of the credible new rock music. In my opinion, No one even comes close to the sound KISW produces with playlist mixture and selection of music.

KISW has some of the most dynamic personalities on the air in Seattle. KISW also has the most listener interaction than any of the other stations. The air staff is all about customer service and representing the station in the public eye in a positive manner. Their number one goal is to have fun with the listeners. Some stations could give a crap about interacting with the listeners. KISW's air staff goes above and beyond the call of duty when representing the station.

That's why I believe KISW is THE ROCK station in Seattle.

Seattle's best rock station that ever was was KXRX. It played the best music and had the best talent Seattle ever had, all on one station. Since then, there has been nothing but mere imitations.

If someone with a brain come duplicate THAT, it truly would be Seattle's Best Rock!

Agreed. I've been hoping for a return of something similar for a long time.

I live in Bellingham and thus can listen to 3 different Jack's. The 2 Canadian ones have DJs. What are the chances of that happening in Seattle?

Look if you take the time to check KZOK has dominated GreT Rock in this town for nine thats right count 'em nine years! With the shot at being #1 25-54 for the year . . . the only real demo that matters. Classic Rock still the best rock and I'm 26!

Yeah, well Dave Richards doesn't decide the music over at KISW, Ryan Castle, the APD & MD is the one who puts that together.
They used to have a "music committee" over there with P-Nut & Jolene, Castle and some others in it, not sure if they still do but the responsibility does ultimately fall on castle as far as what they play.
I'll give Dave props for bringing BJ Shea from down the hall and putting him on the Rock in the mornings as Bj has a good show and appeals to the male demo but as I said he didn't and doesn't decide the music.

Very little of the new music KISW plays is "credible" new rock. Credible new rock bands are on 90.3 and 107.7. KISW is a station for a certain sound of rock, but "credible" has very little to do with any of their currents.

"Yeah, well Dave Richards doesn't decide the music over at KISW, Ryan Castle, the APD & MD is the one who puts that together."

Lol....Ya well GenXer...sorry to break this to ya but Dave Richards is the PD, (and I think what the dir. of Programming for KISW/KNDD/KWOLF....something like that). ANYWAYS. My point is this.....even though Ryan may be the APD and MD, Dave has final say on EVERYTHING! I know MD's that NEVER even schedule music! Ryan probably schedules everything because he's not on-air, but truthfully, the MD title doesn't hold as much power as it used too. I'm willing to bet that Dave has final say on adds, drops, and rotation. With all that talk that Selector screen must be pretty empy each hour. What three catagories? (C) for Corporate Rock, i.e, Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin etc, (G) for Grunge......Nirvana etc, and (Z) for Classic Rock or "hey let's try to grab some of K(Z)OK's listeners by playing Hendrix and Floyd and hope they sit through a quarter hour of Nickelback and talk." Remember the days of "Less Talk....More Rock"?

In the era of the iPod and mobile devices such as Blackberries to store and play our favorite music on I think in more and more cases radio is the last place people are turning for a music fix.

People are tuning in radio for alternate entertainment more and more, and I think the model KISW has been riding this past year proves this. They saw the change and rolled the dice and came up with a winner...

You can bet as mobile devices take hold more stations will follow suit and begin programming beyond just music.

So genius Dave Richards formula for success is to do what Steve Young did back when he was running KISW? Sorry, Richards is not worthy to clean Steve Young's toilet. Unfortunate that so many good people had to lose their jobs before Entercom figured that one out...and many of these former employees were vocal about the sh#& programming of David Field/Clark Ryan/Fred Jacobs/Dave Richards. And now we get about 10 minutes of music a day in between inane chucklefests that make Bevis and Butthead seem like noo-kyoo-lar physicists. This is the best we can do in Rockin' Seattle? I completely agree that this town is SCREAMING for a decent rock station, and one with chunks of the likes of KISW in its stool.

Finally, a beacon of light in the darkness of Seattle radio commentary. Mr. Gozinya, I agree completely and would like to name you poet laureate of Radio-Info.

Seattle has the distinction of having among the largest number of rock stations of any large market. I'm not sure even Denver and Phoenix has seven rock stations.

Hard Rock KISW
Classic Rock KZOK
Classic Hits KJR-FM
Alternative KNDD and KFNK
Adult Rock KMTT
Jack KJAQ

Contrast that with NYC which has a Classic Rock station and a Jack station (and on weekends a Hot Talk station plays Rock).

By the way, someone in Bellingham posted he can hear three Jack stations... Seattle and Vancouver are two... What's the third?

I said that. The third Jack is in Victoria/on Vancouver island. 103.1

And yes, they have jocks as well as the Vancouver 96.9 Jack.
