Sebastian Leaves The Wolf

John Sebastian and The Wolf are splitting up. Here's the press release from John:

Today Cumulus Media and I have agreed my contract will not be renewed. Dan Bennett is a great Manager and I’ll cherish the working relationship I’ve had with all the great Wolf Gang here in Dallas. John and Lew Dickey have always treated me well and I appreciate all the opportunities they’ve afforded me.

Since my arrival we’ve turned around the ratings in this hotly contested country market—8 stations that do some form of country programming. Most importantly, we’ve been fortunate to beat our most direct competitor, KSCS, in all three quarterly Arbitron “books” and in 8 of the 9 individual months surveyed in 25-54 persons.

Philosophical differences about how to go forward with The Wolf have made it necessary to make this decision and I honor that. I wish all the folks at Cumulus nothing but success in their future endeavors.

Lon Helton also reported in today's 'Country Aircheck' that his resignation comes on the same day when the latest Arbitrons are slated for release.

Hmmmmm.....

Does anyone remember when we - the altruistic, ever doting, self-appointed pundits of Radio-Info - discussed his appearance in this market?

Yeah, that's what I thought. It's all coming back now, huh. Looks like there are some soothsayers among us. Good times.

NEXT???

We all knew it was a matter of time for John to leave once again. Next stop? Florida?

This note from John to staff on the latest ratings - just released today:

You may have heard my contract with Cumulus and The Wolf was not renewed today. Ironically, our fall book was released this afternoon also. This is the last ratings reflection of my work here in Dallas. All comparisons are Summer book to Fall book:

12+ 6 AM-Midnight Monday-Sunday The Wolf rises 2.7-3.1 beating KSCS flat at 2.9.
18-34 Persons 6 AM-Midnight Monday-Sunday Wolf 2.2-2.7--KSCS 1.2-1.5.
25-54 Persons Wolf 2.7-3.0 versus KSCS 2.2-2.4.
Congratulations to our whole team and everyone that contributed. We beat all our country competitors--all eight of them--in every key demo and every daypart in the fall ratings period--the most important book of the year!

During my time here at The Wolf we won all three quarterly Arbitron books with no fluke months; winning 8 out of the 9 individual months 25-54 and 18-34 persons.

Is there a pattern to this? I dunno who needs a 30 day maximum renewal contract more --- Sebastian or Crumulus.

Pattern?

Try M.O.

John comes to a station, makes changes to the music selection, toots his own horn when the ratings come out, then eventually departs the station. :p ::)

Maybe they realized he ran off all the good talent (Amy B Ect) and his so called ratings improvements were the result of normal cyclical seasonal patterns, and the next book he will be due to crash hard. Of course then he can say that it will be because he left.

So how did that 'good talent' help KSCS's ratings? Oh yeah, that's right, it didn't...

And I don't remember exactly when Amy B went on, but this monthly trend is with her on KSCS...
