SEC, ESPN ink 15-year deal

WOW!

It's been one day and I still can't believe that the deal went down like it did.

It's definetly the longest for both CBS & ESPN in terms of years.

Not to mention the most expensive for any college conference.

Obviously this means that ESPN will have to find places to syndicate the games on it that won't air on ESPN/ESPN2, but they should have no problem.

I guess they didn't want to be in the raycom family anymore even though they will only be there that one year (Following the buy out of Lincoln Financial Sports).

It does however poses the question, when the ACC's contract comes up, will they all of a sudden up and leave Raycom too?

I guess The Big 11 (10 ;D) is kicking themselves knowing they could've gotten a sweeter ESPN deal.

Good bye Raycom!
Hello ESPN Plus (ESPN Regional)!
;D ;D ;D

I don't understand why SEC fans are so giddy about leaving Raycom Sports. The ESPN Regional Television folks aren't much better than the rotating slate of "Daves", and the production values aren't quite ESPN network level either. Granted, they'll probably spend some money on the latter.

Sports Business Journal today also said that ESPNU will now be picked up by Comcast given this deal. Any idea how long this normally takes? I ask because there are a lot of football games coming up on ESPNU I would like to see!

Personally, I don't see any difference in the production level between ESPN Regional (aka ESPN+) and ESPN National as it seems one and the same to me. But I do notice the difference at the TALENT level though (If you've seen any of the spoonfed Pitt games last year, you'd see what I mean).

JMO....

Cheers :D

Exactly. Those who (fairly or unfairly) complain about Pam Ward should really watch an ESPN+ telecast.

On the contrary. ESPN Plus looks and sounds much better than Raycom Sports.

When the Miami Hurricanes were in the Big East, I watched some of their games on ESPN Plus. It was as good as ESPN itself. When they jumped to the ACC, I also watched some of their games on Raycom Sports.

OMG! The audiovisual differences are very noticeable.

The SEC made a wise decision (and not just from a financial standpoint).

CBS must be pissed. Yes, they get one..maybe the occasional doubleheader...but ESPN gets the rest.

Wouldnt CBS have wanted more SEC action for their recently fired up College Sports channel?

I mean...Even South Carolina vs Vanderbilt..instead of New Mexico at TCU?

I don't want to say I told you so, but...
From And The Valley Shook:
SEC fans make a sport of mocking the JP/LF/Raycom telecast, and let's be honest, there is much to mock. The production value is rather poor,...
How about that! I'm not the only one who agrees.
This just in...
Save the Three Daves of JP/LF/Raycom...Please, God, No

You don't need to say 'I told you so'. I stand by my own observations, I don't need the validations of dweebs from Deadspin. You're right that the old telecasts from back in the day were basic and on the cheap. But to pretend that they haven't stepped up on-air graphics and overall presentation is nothing short of revisionism--take a look at "College Flash Classics" on FSN. There's no way those broadcasts stand up to a 2007 replay. If they were really bad telecasts, nobody would watch them, period.

And no, I don't work for Lincoln Financial insurance, nor Raycom Television.

I don't know which is worse on Raycom (aka JP then LF)...the video work or the announcers. Personally, I think the announcers are worse. They're so bad that if Alabama is on (and I must admit, I'm an Auburn fan), I'll turn the audio on the TV down and listen to Eli Gold: a great hockey announcer and a good NASCAR annnouncer, but not exactly the best radio play-by-play guy in the SEC.

SEC fans applauded this deal thinking that they'd be rid of the 'Daves', and we'll find out if ESPN (and especially ESPN Regional) are better partners. I think they'll realize soon enough that the talent they send for epic Mississippi State/Vandy match-ups on ESPNU won't be much better.

Now, instead of the three Daves, we'll probably get Lowell Galindo in studio (not bad), but the play-by-play announcers include Clay Matvick (who, for most?), Beth Mowins, and maybe Mike Gleason, unless ESPN+ hires someone new. At least there will be better production values than Raycom, especially when they air more than one game at a time for a conference.

Raycom, if they air two games, puts their worst talent on (most people you never hear of outside of ACC country), and it is a second-rate Raycom telecast. That's how local sports anchors (like Charleston's Warren Peper) got to be sideline reporters on Raycom SEC games in the late 90s.

Also Raycom tends to show a big promo ad near the score graphic. Yes CBS does this during March Madness with the top score board but its small and in the top right corner. As for the SEC going to ESPN it will look great on ESPN Plus, just like watching ESPN if you ask me. I wonder if they will take anyone from Raycom to do SEC games?

For now Raycom still has the ACC until they want to move or stay with Raycom. Maybe CBS would want the ACC deal.
