Second Top 40 stations with less power.

How many lesser known Top 40 stations can you name that produced great sounds in the shadows of a legendary giant.

Examples: WITH , KNUZ, KUDL, WMCK, WYSL---------more?

Off the top of my head.....

WYNR, WRIT, KSO, WKNR, WIL, CKEY, KBOX, WUBE....

Not all of these was "in the shadow of a legend", but they held their own....at least for a time....against very strong competitors with a better signal.

WYNR could barely be heard in the far north suburbs of Chicago VS WLS' tremendous signal.
Another that comes to mind is WWDJ VS WABC.

Wasn't KYA the big sound with KEWB second?
Was WKYC really bigger than WHK? (not signal)
Was WBZ bigger with the youth market than WMEX?

KYA had a weaker nightime signal especially when compared to KFRC which went Top 40 in 66.
WBZ was not really Top 40 they were more full service although Bruce Bradley had a good show in the evenings.
I don't think WKYC ever reached the popularity of WHK, but signal wise they were the only Cleveland Top 40 you could hear for distance.

Which was bigger?

WNDR or WOLF?
WOND or WMID in Atlantic City. Both rockin in 62?
WEAM at a feeble 1390, daytime only WPGC, or WEEL in pre WRC DC?
KIMN or KBTR?

How about WNOE or WTIX?
WFUN or WQAM?

WHEN I heard them, they sounded pretty equal. 790 and 560 both came in well and so did the two in New Orleans? . WQAM is called legendary, but WFUN didn't go to talk at 11PM when the cruisin was in high gear. Based only on that, I took WFUN to be the "groovier" station, but it seems the radio pundits think not
Usually the second station might have signal issues ( such as being at 1240) , but I didn't see that in Miami nor New Orleans back when "groovin was everything"

IME, the signals for these pairs were roughly comparable. Certainly that was the case for WNOE/WTIX....different patterns, but still effectively big signals.

Speaking of 'TIX....or more correctly 690. Does anyone know if this signal is finallly back up to 10kw? I believe it is, but I'm not sure. I'm going to be in the neighborhood down there late next week and was just wondering.

WNOE was stronger in the daytime. WFUN was more directional at night. If you were SW of Miami it was sometimes harder to hear.

I was always puzzled. Back in 1962, stations usually tied their branding to the calls or the city. WQAM and 'Tiger Radio" seemed totally disconnected. And they went talk from 11 to 1 AM daily. WFUN had fantastic calls that really fit the format and the city. They were music 24/7. Why is WQAM the one called "legendary" and has a tribute page ? When I was in Miami in the Sixties, I really considered WQAM the second station.

I remember it the same way. WFUN was a better listen.

In Atlanta, WPLO/590 had a better signal, especially at night, but WQXI/790 was better promoted, and is the "legendary" station. However, if WAKE/1340 had a better signal, it would have beat them both.

WAKE was the first Atlanta rocker, but the city quickly outgrew the signal.

That's why WLS had no problem blowing away then Chicago rocker WJJD. 24 hours and much better signal.

WFUN's tower location(South Miami, not near the core population) and interference from Cuba (even during the day in the late 60's and early 70's especially in western Miami/Dade and western Broward counties) contributed to them being in the shadows of WQAM; they now have an improved pattern and if they had their current signal today; they may have very well been the dominant station.

WQAM's signal reached a lot further north, into Palm Beach county and Martin county as well, whereas WFUN's signal was weaker and had the Cuban interference porblem even during the day.

Ft. Lauderdale had SURF radio WSRF-1580, but they weren't in the same league as WQAM or WFUN and their signal really only served Dania Beach to around Deerfield Beach.
