Secular programming on religious networks

I said on another thread that even the religious networks have turned to crap. Of course, I have nothing against religion.

Once all-religious channels like INSP and FamilyNet have started airing secular programming like Matlock and JAG.

Also look at CTS in Canada. It's still run by a Christian nonprofit, it used to be 100% Christian, but now it too is starting to air secular programming.

Well, Matlock did direct his church choir. His daughter sang in the choir, though I recall her getting out of bed topless which suggests she was breaking one of the commandments. She may have been more than topless since it was network TV.

Although given the type of show it was, you probably had lots of people breaking the commandments (and at least one had to break one in particular unless it was an accident), but she was one of the stars.

The people behind RFD-TV bought FamilyNet a couple years back and quickly veered it fully away from religion outside of Sundays. Meanwhile, INSP and UP (the former Gospel Music Channel), along with the Mormon Church's BYU-TV have mainly picked up secular series to actually appeal to cable providers and to get HD carriage they know is the future rather than being stuck in the 'old style' religious SD tier. Of course there's also Pivot's 360, which started as INSP's burn-off lifestyle/public domain TV/awful centralcasted news subchannel iLifeTV before being sold to the people behind Halogen, who then merged with the Doc Channel to form Pivot.

The other thing is they want to appeal more to viewers who aren't into the apocalyptia of TBN or Daystar or strict broadcasters like KNLC or Milwaukee's WVCY (who have banned shows just for the very sin of switching from traditional hymns to current age Christian music; I wish I was kidding), who they usually share a tier with and are ignored because of the reputation those networks have. It's all about getting cable homes and viewers to check out their offerings rather than running hour after hour of preaching and Bible study.

I do give credit to EWTN though; they're serious about their beat and don't take secular shows outside of the old Fulton Sheen sermons. If only more religious networks were more about the teaching than the fundraising.
