A friend of mine who's hobby is bicycles told me he'd like to host a talk show about bicycles - riding tips, different trails, different types of bikes, bike maintaince tips, interviews with racers, etc. I told him what he needs to do is contact one of the smaller radio stations such as WXCT 990 or WMRD 1150 and inquire about buying time. He said he had no problem with that. Then he tells me that he doesn't think he has a voice for radio and wants me to be the host of the show since I already have (although limited) on-air expereince. He said "he'll write down everything he wants me to say". Just to be polite I told him I'd think about it. I really have no interest in doing this. And I personally think that almost any voice can be a radio host. How can I convince him of this? If I were to have another radio show it wouldn't be about bicycles. It would be about something I'm interested in.

Ummm...I think the idea is NICHE PROGRAMMING. No, not EVERYONE would enjoy such a topic, BUT there are people who love biking...they have WHOLE magazines on the topic. There is a reason one would look to a smaller station as an outlet and not the 50k flame thrower. There are also many sponsorship opportuntities...opportunities for shops that cater to bikers that they wouldn't normally get....unless they advertise in one of the magazines....

There are MANY MANY NICHE PROGRAMS that are very successful, even on the national level. There is Scuba Radio, Talkin' Pets, Animal Radio, Ask the Handyman, On the Road, Handle on the Law, Cigar Dave...

Get out of your box, the world is a BIG place. The first rule of programming: Don't program what YOU want to hear. <P ID="signature">______________

Actually, you must stop by for the "TED". It's actually a rum and coke but Ted claims he invented it.
