SEEKING VOICE OF REASON

At KIVA in Albuquerque, we are looking for a syndicated talk program we can carry in the evenings starting at 7 PM, for two to three hours, live or by refeed or via our own delay. In the market are Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, Imus, Ingraham, Schlessinger, Beck, Medved, Boortz, Levin, Stephanie Miller, Hartman, Rhodes, Schultz, Maddow, Malloy and Lionel.

We run Doug Stephan, Joy Browne, Clark Howard and Dr. Edell and a live local program in the daytime. We want to freshen up our evenings, and currently have contracts with Lou Dobbs and Jerry Doyle, both of which are under consideration. Our daytime NON-political programming is working very well for us, and the revenue opportunities tied to our local afternoon program (which IS largely political, by the way) are good.

So, we are looking for a syndicated talk show that is similar to Gene Burns on KGO - respectful of our audience, fun, conversant, intelligent, probing, non-hostile. Most of the syndicated shows out there constantly refer to the hosts on other stations, thereby giving them a plug. Many hosts play back and then mock comments made by other talkshow hosts or cable TV hosts, thereby also plugging them, and gee - what if one of our listeners actually likes one of the hosts on TV or a competing station and hears them torn apart on the air?

We are looking for a syndicated program that is NOT Republicans Good - Democrats Bad, or Democrats Good - Republicans Bad. An "issues of the day" program that lends insight, stimulates independent thinking, and is riveting. An escape from the hostility of garden-variety syndicated talk radio. Like Doug Stephan would do if he did a straight-ahead talk show.

So, I need your help. What is out there for us?

Someday I should set up a separate account on Radio-Info and "come out".

Thanks, Don

Let me second the "let your tribe prosper" emotion.

I've heard that type of program done on the local level, but not at the syndicated level (or one done well). About the closest I've heard is Jim Bohannan, I think he feeds later than what you plan to clear and since he's topical, he needs to be at least aired the same day.

I've not heard Stephan in some time (I go back to when he did his 7 o'clock hour with Nancy Skinner), and while not political he was always very libertarian. Uncle Dougy has very strong I don't need rules attitude that used to shine through on his show.

Although you clear Clark Howard, you could do Dave Ramsey. He does go off on rants that tend to lead one to conclude Republicans Good-Dems Bad, but his show has enough drama with the train wrecks that make it to the air it could be compelling. Plus, he is pretty good about getting his audience to be loyal to him and the stations that clear him.

That's an accurate description of Free Talk Live, now heard on over 60 stations nationwide. ;)

So Ian, have you called KIVA to get cleared?

Yes, Don is well aware of FTL. My post was intended primarily for other PDs who may be reading this. ;)
