Selling Ads

My dream station is a old school Hip Hop and R&B station kind of like KDAY in LA. Obviously that will never happen here in San Antonio. People always say such things like "A station like that wouldn't sell"

Everyone knows that ads are pretty expensive. If someone took a chance and brought a station like this or some other non traditional format could it survive if radio ad sales cost were lowered?

Thoughts?

As Deep Throat told Woodward and Bernstien: "Follow the money".
Where do hip-hop and R&B fans spend their money?
Are there local businesses that are run by fans of the genres?
Are there people who want to reach fans of 'Old School"?

Now's the time to think outside the box; webstream, podcast, self-published cd's... build a community, then look for an available radio outlet.
Good luck. I hope someone can do it.
Prove that it works.
Then maybe I can launch my own 'All Sousa' format.

I would assume that there are a lot of businesses out there who want to advertise on radio but dont since the cost is too high. Having said that, I think lowering spot would be successful regardless of format.

Naw, lowering the spot rate won't help if the station doesn't reach the listeners the advertiser is looking for. Don't give up on your vision. Find a way to bring like minded people together, then use the modern media to make the connection. It could be on line. it could be radio. It could be cable tv, it could be twitter. It could be a newsletter that you mimeograph and send by mail. Get creative, make it work. You can do it, Dom.
