Selling dance CDs to the public

nd2023

Banned
Today I got a copy of Ultra Dance 11, and the first thing I noticed was the scantily-clad woman on the cover. I admit that I have no idea who that woman is, or whether she's one of the artists or not. I'm not saying that the CD is bad, it's an excellent compilation of the past year's dance/pop hits.

However, there are many more faceless artists and producers that actually produce the tracks in the compilation. Instead of putting just one scantily clad woman on the cover, why not put pictures of several of the artists and producers. They're selling dance music, not porn. The thing that should stand out is what songs are on the CD, not a provocative picture on the cover.

This is just yet another reason why the public is confused about dance music. The average person thinks David Guetta is a singer, not a producer.

The Now series doesnt have the artist on the cover. Most compilations never have the artists picture on there. Sex sells product.

Were you digging through my files 10 years ago when I wrote this? :)

It's about Marketing and like Brett said, Sex Sells. This has been going on for decades. ;)

Though, perhaps in the "booklet", they should put pictures of artists in there. I don't see that in those compilations. Then again, when was the last time I purchased a CD? Hmmmm.....

Notice that now when you look at albums at FYE, they sell them in an iTunes card type and you download the albums now.

Could it be because even the industry people don't know who these people are? We get promotional material all the time with artist/producer/mixer spelling errors. If the people promoting the music don't know, how can you expect a compilation CD to have the info.

I'm not calling out any single label/promoter/station - we've all had our share of oopsies. Just some are worse than others.

Stuff like that, you would expect it from bootlegs, but not from real promos.

I think that it's because in most cases the licensing label isn't interested in promoting someone elses artist as much as they are interested in promoting their own brand. The imaging of the cd is a big part of that.

What does label x gain by putting a picture of label y's artist on or in a cd? They would be promoting the competitions artist and not benefiting at all so they aren't going to do it.

I don't care what's on the cover, I care about what's under the cover, meaning the music. If I don't like the tracks, I'm not buying the CD even if it hasn't a scantily clad hot girl [or hot guy] on the front. And if the damn store has a big-ass price sticker or anti theft device covering up half the tracks so I can't see what they are.....I'm not gonna be buying it there!

(sorry for the delay)w/ the reply:

sure, sex sells.
I agree, with dancerev889 ( a rare site : ) / j-k..ha ha.

also:
im "old" ( mid 30s), and know the artists, either by name of
the group, and/or the songs, and know the comp's
(now thats what i call, club hits) for example, is going
to be familiar and the REMIXes, not the stale, ugh-over played
boring radio edits.
-
but the biggest reason , the bikini girl is on the cover....
believe it or not, it reaches the target market, and its NOT
because sex sells ( that is a *part* of it), and perhaps ties into this answer:
-
most people buying/and-or/down loading the top20 songs ( at the time of this writing)
dont want the 'techno' version(not remix, but dubbed, as version).
secondly, the ONES whom are buying the cd, will be a smart audience, and
know the music (as chris sheppard said, in his heyday, never underestimate your audience)..
the cover is just a "bonus"
-but, if you are :straight,gay men/or women, . . .
that means at your favorite dance club: You are either dressing like her, or looking for the bikini clad girl...
because you are GOING TO A NIGHT CLUB...u wont see thee girl, on the cd - but , there is a chance
at a crowded busy club, you may see some one (or be some one) very close to the "hottie on the cover"
-
take a rock CD, that "pithces" ARENA's best stadium anthems....and the cover
shows a field or scoreboard ( now that is not 'sexy') but it fits the target audience
they cd is aiming to hit
