If this question has appeared somewhere before, I apoligize, but with the JACK format being jockless, anyway here in L.A. where I'm at, how does a JACK station sell music? In other words, say if I heard a song that I liked but I didn't know the title or artist, how would I find out? Do music companies have any influence in the way the station plays the music?

Well, first of all, radio stations don't SELL music.

Hell, most radio stations don't allow their jocks to front or back announce because some programmer decided that doing so would piss off the listener. Silly, because even on an oldies station where most of the titles are embedded in your DNA, people still want to know the titles.

Several of the JACKs (for example NYC's ilikejack.com) list the entire day of music on the website. You can also use yes.com to track a song you heard and it lonks you to an online music source to purchase it, if you wish.

Music companies have influence in the way a station plays the music? You bet, just ask the folks that got kakked in the payola scandal recently.

This would be another good point to throw in the suggestion to have Jack stations "flip on" the Auto-Backsell feature that some fully or highly automated stations are doing now. I would find this especially helpful in the likely event that Jack throws something on that sounds very familiar but i have no idea who it's by and what it's called.

By the by.. I wonder how much a typical voice talent would charge a station for cutting some 1200 tracks with artist - song info. Your thoughts??

Damn if I know, Timmy...but our voice talent is handled by The William Morris Agency. And if he voices 1200 titles, what do we do about all the rest?

Where have you been? I really thought you'd be smart
enough to see through that sappy post, but obviously
not. Still under the desk trying to sell that 80's
disco/techno dance format to AM radio in the outskirts
of the Windy City, huh?

Alive and doing fine. Been enjoying the Sox the last few days. Sorry about the politician thing. Having to be in the same room as them for one of the games at US Cellular brought that to mind. It was low, sorry. It's amazing how little they knew about the game.

The only one who really knew what was going on was Mayor Daley. The rest of them were there for the atmosphere, they must've been worn out from doing so little for the people. The Astros have nothing to be ashamed of, it was the best four game series I've ever seen. The Sox made the plays they had to when they needed to and their pitching! Well, what can you say, great pitchers make great hitters miss. Someone's gotta lose and someone's gonna play better when they have to and that's really all the Sox did. Loved Garner's outburst! It was great to see a coach have his heart and mind in the game at the same time. Very rare.
