Selling spots in Canada

timtron said:
I was wondering what the deal is . We( Legacy 1160) are leasing out Allan Weiners 5Kw border blaster on 780 Khz with our oldies format. I know that WXME radio covers most of New Brunswick and fills a format hole. Problem is we need to be able to do sales over the border. I am not sure how to go about it . Any input would be appreciated. Timtron

Ask the folks at WQDY in Calais!! They seem to be doing it quite well!

I understand it used to be easier to do business across the border but as mentioned above, Canadian tax laws don't allow deductions for advertising done on U.S. stations. Of course, if the advertiser is big enough, he'll go ahead and advertise anyway if it brings in customers. And the U.S. station, knowing the advertiser is not getting a tax break, may sell Canadian clients at cheaper rates.

But in these times, a sale is a sale and a customer is a customer.

Another U.S. station that aimed mostly at Canadian Viewers was Channel 12 Bellingham, Washington, not far from the third largest Canadian TV market, Vancouver-Victoria. At one time, they had tons of Canadian commercials. Today, they still have some. They're still carried on all Vancouver-Victoria cable systems, along with most of the Seattle TV stations, but Channel 12 has to depend more on Northwest Washington State advertisers because the Canadian government doesn't give a tax break for ads on U.S. stations.

I remember the tax change going into effect. Canadians pay high taxes on everything. They are used to it. It wasn't a big deal.
