Selling WFOX Call Letters

With the flip to Jamz in '03 and now "The RIVER", I have wondered if Cox has tried, and is trying, to sell the calls to - say - the FOX Network for a pile of cash. Has anyone heard anything about this?

I know calls aren't that important these days, but just curious. Thanx.

With a few exceptions, Cox and CBS (unlike Clear Channel and many others) does not change calls with a format flip. Cox did change the calls on its new Christian station in Tulsa just recently, which is unusual.

BTW, it is illegal to sell call letters as far as I am aware of.

Look at the callsign changes for 99.7 from 1984-1988, and you will see how eager many owners are to change calls when the format changes.

Turner made some contributions to MIT in exchange for the WTBS calls from their student radio station.

yes, there are ways around that.

i've heard that years back fox broadcasting tried to buy the wfox calls from then shamrock broadcasting for their o&o station in new york (wnyw). i can't imagine that they wouldn't jump at the chance to get them now.

but then it's kind of ironic that the KFOX calls belong to cox, and are being used on their tv property in el paso, tx (fox affiliate)...

i'd think cox would put kfox on the oakland/san francisco fox affiliate they own (ktvu) and hold the wfox calls for a future cox owned fox affiliate in the east.

or, if the $$$ is right, sell 'em both to fox for NYC and LA.

Not so. If someone wanted to pay Cox to "release" the calls, so that they could apply for them, it can be done. It has been done many times by others.<P ID="signature">______________

Jefferson-Pilot compensated WSTR in Sturgis, Michigan to release their call sign in 1989 as well.

CBS (was Infinity) changed the calls on most of the stations they flipped to the JACK format. The exception was WCBS-FM in NYC.
