Selma has a NEW Country station!

So, As of 5:41pm today WALX HD-2 is officially - Kicks Country - being simulcast on the translator at 101.5. First hour sounds great!

That's simply amazing.

I had a feeling this HD channel and relay was going to fill in that void.

Hope they have success with the format.

Love you WALX.

So what formats are on strong local signals in Selma now? Which Montgomery or out-of-town stations have city grade signals in Selma? Yeah, I could look it up but Radio-Locator isn't known to be perfect.

To Mr. Poledo, here's a list of those stations:

WAPR 88.3 (Public Radio)
WRNF 89.5 (Christian Talk Moody)
WAQU 91.1 (Christian Talk AFR)
WDXX 100.1 (Variety Hits)
WALX 100.9 (Classic Hits)
WBFZ 105.3 (Urban)

From Montgomery, I can get these stations on most days:

89.1 (Christian Talk Moody and Local)
89.9 (Public Radio)
90.7 (Jazz)
92.3 (Country)
95.1 (Mainstream Rock)
98.9 (Country)
101.9 (Top 40)
103.3 (Light Rock)
104.3 (Hallelujah Black Gospel)
105.7 (Urban)

To Mr. Zach, they did.  Kix is indeed filling in the void WDXX left behind.  I'm going to predict this new radio station will be a hit right out the box.  And like you, Country isn't my thing either.

So it looks like your missing Rock, Classic Rock, and the big hole is A/C.

Does Country on this 101.5 translator stand a chance going up against WLWI? Talk a a about heritage, WLWI has been broadcasting Country to Selma and all surrounding towns since George Wallace was still in diapers. Does WBAM make an impact in Selma?

Those big Montgomery Country stations combined with several other small town country stations in the area make me think A/C might have been the smarter choice and a cheaper quality product to produce. If Fuzion does fail as a Gump rimshot they have a strong enough Selma signal to kill Country on 101.5 with only 250 watts and middle aged woman music is still absent from the dial and therefore a very viable option. Country cost money because we want it to be live and local. You don't spend live and local money to program a 250 watt translator.

I'm confused. But since I don't live in Selma I can't get a feel of the market's wants or needs.

Kix came about, because the Country audience spoke the loudest.

Those people were not too happy when Dixie went to Fuzion.

They wanted someone local to bring this format back.

Hence the reason why Alexander Broadcasting went this route.

I agree its a smart move for Alexander to implement the country format, but there are also two more country stations which should be city grade in Selma - WINL Linden (98.5) and WNPT Marion (Catfish Country 102.9). And I know on the western outskirts of Selma - you can often pick up the two Meridian country powerhouses as well.

I suppose having two variety hits stations kinda kills the need for any of those. ;)

Variety Hits/Classic Hits is just a cheap excuse to try to please everybody. Doesn't it seem odd that Selma doesn't have good coverage from an AC station ala Lite Mix 99.9, WMEZ 94.1, Coast 93.3, Sunny 98.5, Magic 93.7, WOOF 99.7, Magic 96.5, etc, etc...?

Country and AC are the top money earners in Radio, right?

Poledo,

Actually, going Country makes perfect sense. First off, there was demand for the format, which was abandoned by Reynolds. Selma demographics do not support AC, which is typically suburban white women, and AC is having identity issues all over the country. Thirdly, WBAM and WLWI charge advertising rates than cannot be afforded or justified by the local Selma market. Finally, both Montgomery Country stations are just that - Montgomery stations, both in their approach and orientation. A 250 watt translator covers the entire market with a 60db signal. Look at Montgomery, where a 100 watt translator (Gump) has beaten the 25,000 (Fox) two out of the last 4 Arbitrons. Smart, smart move on Alexanders part. This station will be VERY popular and successful. Congrats!

Is it likely that 101.5 will get live jocks in morning and afternoon drive time? Is it likely folks would choose to listen to 101.5 in Selma without any local production when they already have multiple, familiar, Country stations with long histories to choose from.

I completely get the advertising aspect... but no one listens to a station simply because it runs local commercials, do they?

I've always looked at WLWI and WBAM as regional stations like Hot 105.7. Do people in Troy and Greenville not listen to the monster country stations? Are they content to change the channel a couple of times while commuting outside of the coverage area of the local Class A Country stations?

Poledo,

You missed the point. Selma is an unrated market. This is about being able to generate revenue for the owner. The listeners will be there. The station need TI be able to sell commercials.

This station will be a top biller for sure.

The audience is there for it.

The advertisers will be there too.

Glad that Kix is filling in that void.

I see this station having major success myself.

What does "TI" stand for?

Did I miss the point? What did I miss? I know Selma is unrated but they have about 6 local stations competing for very few advertising dollars.

The only odd thing I see is a market, unrated, with one of the top 2 formats in Dixie relegated to a 250 watt translator. I would be far less confused if the WALX all over the road Classic Hits format was being moved to 101.5 and Country was taking the full 50kw signal. Humm, could they be "testing the waters" with Country on the translator? If it takes off would WALX be open to moving Country to the big signal down the road?

Pole,

The"TI" is an iPhone changing the word "to". Guess you know more about the business than the Alexanders. Too bad they didn't hire you to consult. Their new Country station will end up the number 2 billing station in the market-IMHO. But hey, what do I know. I'm just a "wanna be" like the rest of us

Both letters TI being capitalized I thought it was an abbreviation.

Hell no, I don't know enough about the business of radio to even play with a non-profit. The only involvement I've got with radio is writing stations checks to pay advertising bills... and a whole lot of barter.
Selma is also rather unique and I know very little about life and work there. Selma has a high urban population, higher than average poverty rates, a shrinking and aging population. I can't see why anyone would want to run a business under those circumstances.
I'm posting honest, serious questions. I am very curious how things work up there. Down here on the I-10 corridor most stations just fall into place. Format holes pop up and when a station flips formats it doesn't really surprise anyone... Well, the Dickey family throwing WABB in the trash and selling the stick to EMF was a big shock.

Here are some reasons why I know this station will succeed and be a top biller.

1. This new radio station is entertaining and exciting.
2. The people running it know how to keep things in tip top shape.
3. People want to listen to clean sounding radio station, with the least amount of noise possible.
4. People want the playlist to have a mass appeal.
5. People don't want to listen to something that's all over the map.
6. People don't want to hear the same old five to six songs or talking points from day to day.
7. Country is very popular in these parts.
8. People want to hear something that'll give them a good feeling and something to always smile about.

R.D.P. <><

P.S. Take notes everyone.  I can see this station becoming our new number 1, within a matter of time.

B.T.W. I know that prediction is right Mr. Gower sir.  This radio station is destined to be a major player here, real soon.

Personal Note: I believe WBFZ is number 1.  They still make that claim on their broadcast.
