Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) wants to let the government censor Sirius

According to a report in Radio and Records (http://www.radioandrecords.com/Newsroom/2005_11_09/senatortedstevens.asp), Senator Ted Stevens told some broadcasters gathered in Washington, DC, that he intends to seek indecency restrictions for cable TV and for satellite TV and radio.

In other words, "Hey, wait a minute. This guy wants to censor Sirius's content!"

Personally, while I did not subscribe to Sirius in order to hear raunchy material, I'm not terribly offended by what I've heard so far. If I do hear something I don't like, I have no hesitation to "change channels."

What does offend me is the idea that some conservative lawmaker could step in and let the government censor the radio stations I listen to. It also offends me that, now that I've paid for satellite (back when I could still afford it, I splurged on a subscription good for the lifetime of my radio), this senator wants to pass laws fiddling with the content after the fact (of my paying for it).

In a word, "Yuck!"

The rhetorical question occurs to me: Do I need the government to protect me from myself, or does anyone else need the government to protect them from themselves, where subscription radio is concerned? I say no.

Anyone else have thoughts on the matter?

*****

(By the way, as an aside, I might add that although Sirius does not have everything I'd like to hear, someone else on this board had it right in that there's something for everyone -- including myself, very much so -- not everything for someone. For my own part, while I do have my favorites I return to again and again, I don't restrict myself to only a few streams; to me, one of the beauties of Sirius is the rich variety of programming. It actually frustrates me, but in a good way for a change, that I don't have the time to hear everything I'd like to. I might also add that Sirius is a channel-surfer's dream, in my opinion... In short, if I hear something on Sirius I don't like, there are plenty of alternatives. I don't need the government keeping me from listening to it. Also, it just occurred to me that maybe this is a solution waiting for a problem, or something -- LOL...)

(And one other thing. I'm actually bothered more by all the conservative religious programming that seems to be popping up, at least on paper, than by any putative smut. Now I ask you, rhetorically: Will the government protect me from THAT? ... By the way, my real attitude is more realistic, I think. I started to feel tempted, momentarily, to wax political about politics and the religious right, something I feel strongly about. But in terms of Sirius, the conservative religious programming is there for those who need/want it, and I don't have to listen to it if I don't want to. There's a surplus of other material on Sirius for me to listen to instead.)

Probably because the satellite footprints don't reach into Alaska....

hopefully....

with bush's poor performance and his run-amuck staff splintering the republicans this religious control crap will lose its steam this year.

funny for all the so-called heightened awareness for decency i just read there is more sex on tv now then ever before.

Follow-up: Senate committee "decency" hearing scheduled

FMQB, citing Reuters, reports that the Senate Commerce Committee will meet Nov. 29 to consider "indecent content" on television.

Said the report, "They hope the forum will shed some light on how they should proceed with potential legislation that would limit indecent material. Alaska Republican Senator Ted Stevens said the forum will include representatives from television broadcasters, cable companies and content providers, according to a Reuters report."

It added, "Reuters reports that a Republican Senate Commerce Committee staff member said that it is possible the Senate could complete work on decency legislation this year, but it is unlikely."

"Currently, the indecency regulations do not apply to cable television and satellite radio broadcasters, and that has raised concerns amongst some lawmakers such as Stevens. It remains to be seen whether lawmakers will try to regulate those forms of broadcasting ..."

I just find it funny that a senator wants to try to start a indecency restriction on cable TV, and satellite Radio. All because Stern is going to Sirius just to get away from the indecency restrictions of Broadcast Radio and TV

I wonder:

A) If this "indecency crusade" Ted Stevens is on has any kick to it (This is, after all, the man who threatened to resign if a $70 million bridge wasn't built to service 70 Alaskan Islanders)

B) If it does have any kick, how long it will be before it's repealed, or declared unconstitutional (this is the equivalent of making porn movies censored...your paying to see the goods...it's not available for the public to see without money)

*sigh* and to think that at one point I voted Republican...

Do XM and Sirius systems even work in Alaska? I don't see how he can possibly claim he's protecting his constituents.

I have heard that Clear Channel is a large contributor to his campaign. However, I do not know if it is true and I'm too tired to look it up.

It is not the fault of the true Reps. These are big government Republicans. They are basically Socialists who are only interested in bringing a Theocracy to the country while ensuring that they hold all of the power. These guys have been around forever.

It was Reaganwho clamped them down for a while but the Bush family has brought an invasion of them. This is what happened under Nixon. What'll happen is that (if they are smart) the Dems will go towards the middle and they'll take control of the government.

Then you will see the Reps straighten there act out and become the Reps you once voted for.

It is very human to become fat and lazy and the Reps look like Limbaugh right now (before he got on the Oxycontin diet plan).

Yeah...not to get on a political rant, but "Big government" is why I voted Libertarian last election...and the election before that...

I'm just shocked. Less than 10 years ago, these folks were keeping some of Clinton's social programs in check...now we have expenditures that have skyrocketed with no side really wanting to give. Now, these same fine folks think it's OK to spend mad amounts of money to turn America into another UK: Tight media regulation and a quasi-police state...

Anyway, Ivan, you basically summed it all up. This was a way for me to vent...you rock!

Hopefully we will continue to be able to hear "bulls**t" on Pink Floyd's Money, hear Howard explicitly talk about female ejaculation or whatnot like a 14 year-old, and hear Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words" on Raw Dog Comedy...

I can just hope Stevens is spinning his wheels and nothing else...

Now admittedly, I may be mistaken, seeing that there are two senators from each state. But is this the buttmunch senator from Alaska that refused to swear in the oil executives just the other day because he alone deemed it 'out of order'?

EDIT: Just confirmed...That WAS Sen. Ted Stevens. What a joke this guy is.
Edited by nocternal_freek on 11/13/05 09:58 AM.

Nice, what an ******.

/Louisianan here...

Please, everyone stop referring to satellite radio and television as "broadcasting". The traditional word for restricted access transmitting has always been, "narrowcasting". Narrow means the exact opposite of broad.
______________
