Seoul 730 KKDA

The saddest day in Dallas/Fort Worth Radio. No more Crooner, no more DMZ. A "Black" voice gone!!!!

Sad to start off the new year with the news of Soul 730 KKDA's demise. The station ends a 42 year, 9 month run with its rhythm and blues format after being sold for $1.9 million to a group that has installed a Korean-language format in its place.

A sad day it is. It looks like the days of R&B on the AM band is going the way of the dinosaur, and there are not many of them left these days.

They were my favorite station for many years and still sounded good though not quite at the same high level after they streamlined their sound last year.

Here are some airchecks from 2004 that capture the way they sounded when for me listening to them (as an urban oldies radio fanatic) was sort of like drinking a fine wine:

More on the Texas page of my website.

They had a very good daytime signal, I can remember one time listening to them at least an hour across the Oklahoma state line. They switched to r and b in 1970. Wish there were some airchecks from the 70s and 80s around.

For fans of r and b oldies on AM, this is what we have left:

WDIA
WDAS-AM
WWWS-AM
WVOL
KCOH afternoons and evenings
WMCS (Evenings and Saturdays)

We lost KKDA-AM and KRJO this year and it remains to be seen what happens with KCOH

KCOH is moving down the dial to 1230 am some time in March.

We still have WQQX AM 1490 East St. Louis IL. They stream on TuneIn.

I like WQQX but I don't quite put them in that elite group.

They are so blues and motown heavy and play little else. It is like their programmer downloaded a bunch of Motown and Blues artists and forgot about the 60s/70s soul from places like Chicago and Philadelphia - Chilites, Dells, Intruders, Stylistics, Blue Magic, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, etc. If they would expand the playlist they would be right up there.

I hope KCOH is successful with the new lease agreement!

Don't know how I forgot WATV Birmingham, it is in my personal top 4 with WDAS-AM, WWWS, and WDIA

Very sad to hear about this news of KKDA. I listened periodically when i visited the DFW. Makes me more thankful that KCOH here in Houston was able to be saved, moving to 1230am soon instead.
