This is for all those programming/music directing/music selection professionals out there:

WMJI had a Rolling Stones weekend starting this past Friday in PM drive (specialty weekend). They also have a daily feature, the 60s at 6--all requests.

I had them on from about 5.30 until about 6.30. My ears (and outrage) perked up at the top of the hour.

They played a Stones song as part of the weekend at just about 5.45, another Stones at or just after the hour, then ANOTHER Stones at 6.10. That's 3 inside of 30 mins, and two inside of ten minutes.

I know we're all about playing the hits and whatnot, and specialty weekends are different rules, but even this is a bit ridiculous.

Comments? (David, OldiesCat, and other PDs?)

Stones

If they're doing a true Stones weekend, that sounds about right-- if you consider how most people listen, doing any less than those many listeners would miss them. I might actually play MORE than 3 per hour- a couple of double-plays per hour would really stand out and let you play some really "forgotten" stones tunes.

An argument could be made that many Oldies stations' theme weekend programming is somewhat ineffective because they doing do ENOUGH of whatever theme. Even on weekends, your Theme has got to be a centerpiece of the presentation. Less than that and it's no more than a slightly diluted version of the station's weekday mix.

Ah, but we're talking two inside of ten minutes (and not a twin-spin weekend), and three inside of 30 mins (or even less).

I agree on the number per hour need to be more than the average rotation, but I still think this is a bit skewed. Especially for the first day (of the weekend series.)

Also, perhaps I should have added that in between Stones #1 and Stones #2 (15 of and top of the hour, there were two other songs, and a stop set.)

Are you saying that the station was playing too many Rolling Stones songs in that 30 minute period, or too less? If you think they were playing too many, I would disagree. As OldiesCat said, perhaps add more.

You have three Stones songs during the time you were listening.

If they played any more than one more Stones song within three hours either way, I believe that would put them in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which limits the number of songs played by any one artist or group to a total of four songs (or only three if consecutive in a row) within any three hour period on broadcast stations which also stream on the web (as WMJI does).

I was arguing contra, but I see your collective points. It just hit me kinda odd to hear three Stones in such a short period of time.

Then again, I was serving subpoenas at the time, so I guess my mind was on "hand, duck, and run"--standard subpoena tactic.

Sounds like you're describing KRTH "It's a Women of Rock Weekend, on
K R T H-FM, Los Angeles!" ...into "My Guy." Or "Dancing In The Street." Again. Yawn.

During the days of Top 40 radio (on AM) theme weekends were popular. Some stations would play two songs by the featured group, Motown, British Invasion, etc., per hour. Some stations would go with 1 song every 20 minutes. Given that the average listener is only tuned in for 20 minutes, the 3 an hour, or every 20 minutes, is correct.

Actually it's three by the same artist and no more than two in a row in a three hour period (unless the rules have been changed). Also, there are exceptions to the DMCA rules. Stations may work with the copyright holders for permission to play more than what the DMCA allows.
