Spot on. Just don't hear it.

Sure it does.

Just ask Disney and their 6.5M lease for the next 10 years deal in New York.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

Well, to be a real comparison, you'd probably have to look at when the Sports Animal debuted on 1250... but in its entire stay on that frequency I'm pretty sure they lingered down around a 1-share at best.

So we're shocked now that a station with a crap product has crap ratings? How many times can you turn on that station and hear Rich Herrera in any and every possible time slot before you never turn it on again. Unless you're a big USF fan and want to hear in depth interviews with their volleyball and soccer coaches why would you ever turn to that station? It's not bad. It's awful.

This.

The idea of an FM sports station had and still has some promise. I was definitely interested when I first heard about it. I have no idea how they arrived at the lineup that they did, but my god is it lame. Yes, we know they are in USF's pocket, but I could even live with that if they had a stronger M-F lineup.

Just look at who is NOT on that station who should be. You don't wanna keep JP? That's fine. Take it or leave it. But now I hear Bobby Fenton on weekends at 620. Local guy, young, entertaining show. Would he not have made perfect sense for 98.7's new roster? Yet he's not there. Krazniqi? Same story, yet he's not there. Even Todd Wright, who IS actually working there, is doing nights while Herrera got bumped into afternoons with Booger. Why? I don't get any of it.

CBS has not yet announced a 6-10PM personality for the national network. So far they have announced Jim Rome noon-3, Doug Gottlieb 3-6, and Scott Ferrall 10P-2A. Wright would be a good fit for the 6-10PM national slot.

I also agree with a post a while back that Booger was holding Todd back. Maybe they figure he'd be better off on his own, even if it remains a local show.

And this is not out of line with other CBS FM sports startups. The reaction in Pittsburgh was similar, as was the focus on University of Pittsburgh sports because it was the first PBP deal they landed. Now they have the Pirates and the midday show (which stil isn't all that good) has had books where they were #1 in 25-54 men.

It's a slow build, and they will probably continue to play with the lineup if it doean't gather some momentum soon.

So, are you surprised a start-up spoken word format unconventionally placed on FM has yet to do well in 12+ just a few months after its debut?

Really, what do you expect out of "The Fan" right now?

Let's just say Todd and Booger didn't exactly see eye to eye and leave it at that. If you can get to the story it's a pretty funny one, but I won't be the one to let it slide. Regardless of time slot though, Todd won here because now Booger has to sit with that turd Herrera every day of his life. He'll regret that before long.

Well, I did hear an exchange where Booger announced that they were taking the show on the road on a Friday and Todd said he wouldn't be there. Either no one had told Todd or he had some sort of understanding that he wouldn't have to do remotes. However, I will say that whatever problems they had they managed to keep it from leaking over too strongly on the air.

I really am amazed at what a polarizing figure Herera is.

I'll bet 620 is a little nervous about 1) the lack of Lightning that would have helped afternoon drive and 2) the fact that very few people apparantly MISS the NHL here...which for the flagship station has to be worrisome.

Wonder what Rome thinks, or even cares, that in this market he's about to go from flamethrower to bic lighter.

98.7 will either help make or break USF hoops. College b-ball in this town always has been kind of "meh".

No surprise that Todd Wright is working on his own. He's better that way, and had a good run on 1010 before Sporting News crapped out.

Not to leave 1040 out, but I wonder how Dan Patrick will fare?

Mike, talk to anyone who's worked with him. Ever.

I have been around plenty of guys who have worked with him. I never bothered to ask what working with him was like so I'll pass on that one. I will say that I've had plenty of feedback about other guys who have worked in this market and some who are still working here. I do have a little list of some of the jerks in this market and Herera isn't on it. That said, it could be because I never asked. And having said all that, I'm sure you can find people who didn't like working with me...

How did the Boner and the Mighty 98 Rock fare? Looks like Rock is dying in Tampa Bay too...

I heard 98.7 is pulling damn near a ZERO in afternoon drive. I know it takes time... but give me a break. That's terrible.

Why would you be surprised? With the exception of Jerry Petuck as Assistant Programming Director, it's still the exact same brain trust that was pulling zeros as WBZZ, WQYK Classic Country, and 1010 Sporting News Radio: Mike Pepper, Monica Idziak, Lynne Austin, etc.

It's the same people that thought Austin & Gunn, Tom Leykis, All Comedy Radio, Classic Country, Al Keck, JP Peterson, etc. would be ratings draws and weren't. They're just broadcasting in stereo now instead of in mono.

It's not like CBS fired Pepper and company and brought in a totally new programming team when they switched to FM.

CC4life - you are completely clueless about the direction CBS Sports Radio.

If you really think Mike Pepper, Lynne Austin (it appears she is only the 'voice' of the station - little other role)....and Jerry Petuck are 'calling the shots' - you shouldn't even be commenting on this board.

Read back on other posts and you will see CBS made significant investments both in management, talent and even a build-out of a 1st class studio for 98.7 The Fan. It is not going to fail. Press releases from 10+ months ago signaled their intentions with the transfer of VP/Market Manager Ben Hill (goes back to the early CBS days with Dan Mason - now CBS Radio President) and bringing Brian Thomas - VP of Programming a few months later down from NYC. Those 2 guys are the 1-2 punch, and rating have already made MAJOR movement on the other CBS Radio stations in the market, and 98.7 is beginning to follow suit in the weekly's as well.......

Show me a LIVE/LOCAL on-air line-up that includes better talent all-day in this market in the spoken word format that includes LIVE/LOCAL updates every 20 minutes, fresh attitude, caller interaction all day, no EGO----- and perhaps your opinion should be trusted, but that isn't going to happen.

CBS has a major initiative across the country in SPORTS radio - and the consulting from outside the market includes executives from San Fran and NYC that have had major success with this in NYC, PITT, PHILLY, CHICAGO, SAN FRAN, and DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket is regularly #1 general market A25-54, and always TOP 3 gen market). For that matter, CBS is the pioneer of all-sports radio with 660 The Fan in NYC. With CBS's understanding of sports in TV, online assets and now even more focus on radio, I'd be remiss if I didn't again remind you - that the folks you mentioned disparagingly were chosen by CBS to execute CBS's strategy. They aren't calling the shots, they are executing the plan.

You may have a bit of envy about not being a part of their team, but over time you will definatively see that 98.7 The Fan and it's little brother 1010 CBS Sports Radio will own the Tampa market share on the radio dial. WDAE will continue on, and do ok, but 98.7 The Fan will be in the drivers seat.
