1949: WFMY-TV (channel 2) signs on in Greensboro, North Carolina, the state’s second TV station (after WBTV Charlotte).
1951: The first live sporting event seen coast-to-coast, a college football game between Duke and Pittsburgh, is telecast on NBC.
1955: Commercial television launches in the U.K. with the sign-on of ITV London.
1957: Maverick debuts on ABC.
1961: Actor Scott Baio (Happy Days, Charles in Charge) is born in Brooklyn, New York.
1968: Land of the Giants premieres on CBS.
1976: TV gets jiggly: Charlie’s Angels premieres on ABC, six months after the TV-movie that launched the premise and characters.
1982: Family Ties premieres on NBC.
1986: ALF debuts on NBC.
1987: Full House premieres on ABC.
1989: Baywatch debuts on NBC, Family Matters on ABC.
1994: Friends debuts on NBC.
1999: The West Wing premieres on NBC.
2004: Notable premieres: CSI: New York on CBS, Lost on ABC, and Veronica Mars on UPN.
