September 25: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on September 25. Discuss or comment as you please……

1929: Journalist Baba Wawa...er...Barbara Walters is born in Brookline, Massachusetts.

1954: WUSD-TV (channel 2, now WCBD-TV) signs on in Charleston, South Carolina.

1961: Actress Heather Locklear (Dynasty, T.J. Hooker, Melrose Place, Spin City) is born in Westwood, California.

1964: Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. premieres on CBS.

1967: WGBX-TV (channel 44) begins operating in Boston, Massachusetts as a “sister” station to WGBH-TV (channel 2). The “X” in the call stands for “eXperimental,” the idea being that ch. 44 would be used to “tryout” some newer, offbeat, or more unfamiliar shows before possibly moving them to ch. 2.

1968: Here Comes the Brides debuts on ABC.

1970: The Partridge Family premieres on ABC.

1982: Silver Spoons premieres on NBC.

1997: NBC’s ER opens its fourth season with a special live episode (“Ambush”). The action is seen from the point of view of a PBS camera crew filming a documentary about the ER.

2005: Actor Don Adams (The Bill Dana Show, Get Smart, Check It Out, Tennessee Tuxedo, Inspector Gadget) dies in Los Angeles, aged 82.

2006: Heroes debuts on NBC.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

This has probably been largely forgotten (except by fans of the show) but today was the 10th anniversary of the premiere of the short-lived Freaks and Geeks on NBC. It started out on Saturday evenings (probably a big mistake there, or maybe not!), moved to Monday evenings, and struggled along for about six months, before finally being cancelled for good in March 2000.

1973: Actress, 1990 Miss Teen USA and Mrs. Pete Sampras Bridgette Wilson is born in Gold Beach, OR. Her resume includes TV appearances on shows including "Saved by the Bell" and "CSI Miami."

1944: Actor Michael Douglas(The Streets of San Francisco, and lots of feature films) is
born in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

1969: Film actress Catherine Zeta-Jones(Chicago, The Mask of Zorro, etc.), who is
currently married to Douglas, is born in Swansea, Wales.

1976: Bombs away: Mr. T and Tina, for which Pat Morita left Happy Days, debuts on ABC. It lasts six weeks but becomes a symbol of bad 70's sitcoms and bad career moves.

1979: Don Knotts joins the cast of Three's Company.

1979: Christopher Lloyd joins the cast of Taxi (Jim's driving test).
