Serif or Sans Serif?

A

Avid Listener

Guest
Are the channel indicator numbers on your TV set that display when you change channels in a Serif typeface, like Times Roman, or a Sans Serif, like Ariel?

Maybe folks just don't understand the difference between serif and sans serif.

This is a serif typeface.

This is a sans serif typeface.

I can't believe this isn't as interesting as talking about which cable systems are cursed.

I don't know what is happening... but both of your samples are showing up on my screen as SERIF. However, I can look at the HTML and see that you have made the entry correctly. I'm going to pull this message up in other browsers and see if it is an issue on the receiving end of the message mechanism. In fact, let me try a couple of samples and let's see what shows up.

This should show up as a serif typeface.

This should show up WITHOUT the serif decor.

O.K. Students, turn your exam papers over and let's get ready to see the grades.

But how do they show up in the post of examples that Avid Listener posted? (I used a differed font than he did to get the sans-serif.) I also am using Firefox and strange things are happening with the font.

I went to Explorer and to Chrome and the samples that Avid posted showed up the way he expected them to. (The SANS SERIF was actually SANS!)

But his examples do not show up corfectly in my version of Firefox!

Things that make you go.... Hmmmmmm!

This is awesome. Are we having a contest to see who can come up with the most inane thread topic?

I have no idea why the question in the original post was asked, but it was and it looks like a reasonable question. But I noticed that the two sample fonts displayed in the 3rd message were BOTH serif fonts rather than demonstrating the difference. (There are likely some who are reading who have never pondered what serif and sans-serif means.)

So I posted a example using "plain arial" rather than 'arial black' or 'arial narrow' and it turns out that arial black and arial narrow are not "kosher" in the world of newer versions of Firefox.

I went out to the Wiki-files where the Firefox programming geeks hang out and you you see the squabble and bruhaha going on over there about the issue... which some consider a NON-issue. Really-really serious programmer folks are not big on flexibility-of-terminology or shades-of-grey. (or is that shades-of-gray?)

Whatever.

There is probably not much more we can do with this thread topic so it probably won't show up tomorrow among the NEW POSTS.

But realize what a stimulating conversation you can initiate during coffee break at work come Monday.

That was my original intent. I wanted to see if I could come up with something sillier than Cursed Cable Systems (or any of the various "cursed" this or that threads), Old cable lineups, or Counties without cable systems.

I think we need a topic for fonts for V-chip ratings. There seem to be some fonts for which the standards are different. By that I mean if you see a TV-PG rating with this font, it might be TV-14 with another font, or TV-PG-V. If you see a V with this font, you'd better know it's not cartoon violence. If you see TV-14, you're dealing with something BAD. And if it's TV-14-V, it's the worst violence broadcast TV will allow.
