Serious Prediction

As many of you know, Citadel has begun to go through a gutteral reduction of major proportions. This has begun in its major markets, but it will find its way to all Citadel markets - guaranteed.

There will be unprecedented, unfortunate and major changes in Portland. This will present opportunites.

Predictions:

1. Many displaced personnel will find their way to Atlantic Coast Radio now that Bob Fuller has an equity interest in the group.
2. WLOB will/should become a Soft AC (Maine's Lite Rock) and take out WHOM at the knees. WHOM's greatest weakness is that they are home to no where. Are they Maine? Are they NH? Are they Portland?
3. WRED will change to something that's not Hip-Hop. Let's get real here.
4. There will be changes at Atlantic Coast to accomodate this influx of personnel. Atlantic Coast's Sales effort (presentation) is not second class or third class....it just doesn't rate. Period.

It will be a very bumpy ride for the next couple of weeks and months. Just buckle up and no screaming in the **** pit.

What makes you think the "help wanted" sign is gonna be out? It's a whole different game today than it was 35 years ago when Fuller-Jeffrey was formed. The ad dollars pie is being divided many more ways today...lean operations are the rule today. I don't see ACR having the ability to absorb very many displaced Citadel staffers.
Also, Bob & JJ have both gotta be pushing 70...how much longer before they decide to cash in & retire?

Good question and here's your answer.

As I understand, Bob Fuller is sending his son (I believe his name is Will although I could be wrong) to Maine to learn radio sales with Atlantic Coast.

Why would he do that? Why would he even invest any money in Atlantic Coast?

Do you think, quite possibly, that he is setting his son up in business - The Radio Business to be exact.

The game plan - to eventually buy out JJ's stations and turn the business over to his son.

For adbuyer 1 & underminer...

I have occasionally worked for ATLANTIC COAST BROADCASTING. However, I'm honored that JJ considers me a good friend. So whatever goes on behind the scenes at A.C.B. really isn't anybody's business?

If you really need to know what's going on....why don't you ask Joe any direct questions that you have? You'll either get an answer or he'll tell you to take a hike!

For anybody who has worked (or is currently working) for any radio station IN ANY MARKET...there's always going to be an on-going battle between an affordable/cost-efficient format, and whether advertisers & listeners are willing to support it? If the latter two elements aren't happening (unless you're working for a listener-supported, PBS station)...it really doesn't matter what type of programming comes out of a radio speaker!

One thing for sure...Maine has always been an interesting radio market! Maybe it's because most of the audience doesn't care if a format works in Boston, New York, L.A. or Florida. If the programming on a particular station makes us feel good or teaches us something...we'll listen. If it doesn't...WE WON'T BOTHER WITH IT!

And how is this any different than listeners in other states? I really don't hear anything particularly unique about Maine radio.

Lets see, Portland's most listened to radio stations are, Top 40, News/Talk, Classic Hits, Country, Classic Rock.
Whats so different than the rest of the country?

Predictions:

1. Many displaced personnel will find their way to Atlantic Coast Radio now that Bob Fuller has an equity interest in the group.

I think the future displaced personel are probobly making too much money and is why they will be displaced.Atlantic Coast can be billing a lot better, but not enough to add big salaries.

2. WLOB will/should become a Soft AC (Maine's Lite Rock) and take out WHOM at the knees. WHOM's greatest weakness is that they are home to no where. Are they Maine? Are they NH? Are they Portland?

If you're in Portland and WHOM is you're radio station musically, what's the alternative? It doesn't matter where they are.WLOB 96.3 has a pretty good mono signal in Portland but if they play music will the stereo signal be good enough to compete with WHOM? Signal problems would be a bigger weakness than not having a home. WHOM is not my kind of station, but I think they sound pretty good.Atlantic Coast would have to spend some money to compete with WHOM.

3. WRED will change to something that's not Hip-Hop. Let's get real here.

What's not "real" about Hip Hop? WRED isn't really Hip Hop.The format has listeners in all demo's.They do pretty well consiodering how great 'JBQ their closest competition does. What could work better on WRED?

4. There will be changes at Atlantic Coast to accomodate this influx of personnel. Atlantic Coast's Sales effort (presentation) is not second class or third class....it just doesn't rate. Period.

There will be changes but I don't think there will be an influx of personel. They're FM stations are all rimshot signals so they'd have to come with something really great and be willing to spend some money. The last big money making move in this market was Frank. Is there another change like that that could happen?

It will be a very bumpy ride for the next couple of weeks and months. Just buckle up and no screaming in the **** pit.

JJ and The Doc are two talented and smart businessmen.
I don't think they're about to start throwing $$$ around to out of work radio people.
