SERIOUS question for the Hitman

Steve...

As G101's "consultant" why are you using the term "At-Work Network" when Lite 94.5/99.5 has been using it for years? Why not just call yourself 101.1 3WZ?

No sarcasm, just curious.

AJ & Revbabe, feel free to contribute.

and please shed some light on the QUICK CASH PAYOFF...looking at slogans on file with Arbitron - it seems there's another station in the market that occasionally uses the term Quick. Why not the Frog-tastic, Hot, Classic, Lite, Smooth Cash giveaway that makes you so excited you say WOW-WEE and is 3Z to play?!

Ladies, ladies, ladies...

Do you guys always have to pick? You sound like a bunch of prissy cheerleaders making fun of the geeky girl who has bigger boobies.
Variety 97.7 in Williamsport; Beaver 103, both of these stations had or still have the At-Work-Network. Both well in the G101 listening reach. Back in 2000, I can remember driving home from the 'Port everyweekend and listening to how Variety was starting to sound like the Beaver 103 of 1998.
As for the "Quick Cash Payoff", heck I can think of a better cash give away name, and it even includes the name of the station. "FREE G's"! Whatever happened to creativity in radio? It really lacks in this area. You wouldn't think so though with all the turnover that Forever Broadcasting offers.
Hitman, I want you to know that I respect you as a broadcaster, but I do have one question myself for you. When will the G101 website be updated to reflect its "newness". For a website that is to be Todays Hit Music, which I might add is the old slogan from Beaver 103 when it was HOT AC...anyway...when is the website going to be updated?? ???

Ummmmmm...Variety and The Beav were in different markets with different target listening audiences....and if you are trying to say the Beav is still on the air, you are mistaken...that station was blown up last February or March.

Listen, this isn't about who is better, I was just asking a simple question...I am not picking on anyone. It's rare that a consultant openly posts on these boards and I want to get into the insightful mind of the Hitman.

Geez...like I said before, I am just curious...can't a young lad expand his mind without being accused of picking on someone?

By the way, I do believe the Beaver's positioner was "Today's Best Music"...common for Hot AC's/Adult CHR's..."anyway."

What about Aardvarks?

Ummmmmmmmm...yea I know Beav was blown out of the water last March, I know Hot was born right after, I know The first song for Hot 103 was 50 Cent Candy Shop...I know the positioner for Lite 94.5 was Lite and easy favorites,Lite 94.5, I know that 98.7 used to be Smooth Jazz WOJZ. I also know that 94.5 before Lite was FROGGY. (I'm still surprised that no one has brought that up since they are doing the simulcast on 98.7 now.) And where did you get the idea that I thought Beaver 103 was still on the air?? And yes, 101.1FM 103.1FMand 97.7FM do overlap over each other at some points towards Lock Haven. I can even reach 97.7 in my car out around Centre Hall.(Although I have to manually dial it in on my tuner).

I never said which station was better...not sure where you read into that.

The Beaver did have the positioner as "Todays Best Music"...good 'ole Keith "I took the station down the drain" Allen added "Not Just Some of it". I remember A.J. saying that a few times on the air after 101 became G101. Matter of fact I remember hearing many sweeps and liners that sounds like they were ripped right from the Beaver right after G101 came on the scene.
I guess I should have stated the obvious in my post, a lot of stations use the same ideas, usually not in the same market, although in this case 101 just picked up what was left over after the dust settled right away.

Re: What about Aardvarks?

"And where did you get the idea that I thought Beaver 103 was still on the air??"

I guess I misunderstood when you said these stations "had or still have"...I am sorry for misquoting you.

Still though, different markets, different advertisers, different listeners.

"I never said which station was better...not sure where you read into that."

Nor did I...nor am I picking an anyone like you stated..I asked a serious question.

"The Beaver did have the positioner as "Todays Best Music"...good 'ole Keith "I took the station down the drain" Allen added "Not Just Some of it". That's not bad, it just shows a lack of creativity or the inability to seek other outlets for "inspiration" (or to steal from)...by the way, I guess you and Keith didn't get along so well, huh?

"I guess I should have stated the obvious in my post, a lot of stations use the same ideas, usually not in the same market, although in this case 101 just picked up what was left over after the dust settled right away."

You do validate my initial question in this statement. Using ideas that have been used in the past, ok...using ideas (in this case a name of a feature) that are currently on the air in the same market, not so ok!?! G didn't pick up what was left over when the dust settled, they didn't look around to see who was doing what.

Like I said initially, I just want to get a consultants take on the matter. Was this intentional or just an oversight? I wish to grow as a broadcaster and absorb from the obvious wealth of knowledge that is the Hitman...seriously.

FWDMO - You are so correct. I have noticed what I think is some kind of vast conspiricy. G101 alos calls themselves a "FM" radio staion. This is just like a whole lot of other radio stations I hear. They even play "music" I heard they talk into a "microphone" and its magic what they say goes out into well, the air just like thousands of other stations. Call the Attorney General!

Dissclaimer: This post brought to you by "todays best poster" -message has not been apprvoed by Hitman consulting LLP and does not reflect his or the WGMRs stance or Hitmans, it is the penguins, but is funny!

....oh stop it....you are too funny...if you keep that up, I might just pee myself...FM, music, microphones...where do you come up with this stuff?? Brilliant humor...ok...I need to breathe...whooh...I'll be laughing about that post all day...Revbabe, you are a funny one! :)

I am so thrilled! The last time I got a smilley face I was six! and on the way home in the schoolbus WCAU was calling themselves "todays best music" Thanks for making my day. How crazy is Happy Valley for Arts fest?

Keith and I got along well, but the track record shows that once he took over as PD it (the station) literally fell in numbers. He wasn't actually a PD anyway...Allen=Tool. Thats why Carol Logan liked him so much prob.

G101 went on the air just weeks after Hot 103 had launched, so they knew what Beaver did originally and what Lite had started. Like any smart programmer you should know what your competition is doing on air. It just shows that "the monkey" at the controls of G101 was not paying attention.

Point in case, you don't have to be in the same market to steal ideas, especially when your side by side. ;D

If you remember back the the days of Old, B103 actually coined the name "At-Work Network". I was well aware that Lite starting using it (by the way...I am fairly certain we used it first...but don't quote me on that...I may be incorrect)...but the thought was that the 2 stations are so vastly different, the odds of a Lite listener hitting G101 or the other way around are slim to none, so it was felt that there was no harm in both of us having the same "handle" for the work day. Besides, the At-Work Network is more of a "frame of mind" than anything. Programming actually changes very little from the work day to the after work hours anyway.

We set out to program a straight up the middle CHR and in doing so, I borrowed a few ideas that had faired well in the past, including B103's At-Work Network. It was not our goal to recreate B103...but they had some things that worked...so why not "reuse em"

You'll be interested to note that the owners and myself did talk this one through. When We thought up the contest, the idea was QUICK as in Easy payoff....we go into the business and we get out of the business as quickly as possible to make a splash while avoiding a major interruption that may upset one's bosses at work. It never occurred to me at the moment that people may associate "QUICK" with QWK and at that time, all the production pieces were ordered and we started promo-ing the contest...so we decided to deal with it. The Quick Cash Payoff has since run its course and yes...if it comes back again...we will most likely give it a different name this go-around.

Contest worked great...but I suppose I could have rethought the name.

The website has been getting a massive makeover. I have seen the "beta version" that we are keeping in-house for now. I do not know any exact date yet, but it should be launching in the near future.

No, I recall Lite using that before G signed on as G.

"but the thought was that the 2 stations are so vastly different, the odds of a Lite listener hitting G101 or the other way around are slim to none, so it was felt that there was no harm in both of us having the same "handle" for the work day."

Wow...now that is the revolutionary consultant info I was looking for...assuming there would be (almost) no cume duplication between a (suposed) CHR and AC in a smal market!! BRILLIANT!?!

"We set out to program a straight up the middle CHR and in doing so, I borrowed a few ideas that had faired well in the past, including B103's At-Work Network."

And yes, the music rotation does reflect text-book (or "straight up the middle") CHR!?!

"It was not our goal to recreate B103...but they had some things that worked...so why not "reuse em"

Ahhh, yes...since retro is in...why not reuse ideas from the 90's...THAT is more of that top notch consultant insder info I wanted...seriously.

Funny how you ask a "serious question" only to turn around and be somewhat "smart" in your tone...but I expect that on this board anyway.

Good radio...is...was and always will be GOOD radio, regardless of the era. There are DJ's out there doing the same bits they have been doing for 20, 30 years or more and they fair just fine. And seeing how CHR seems to come and go in "waves" over the years, today's successful CHR's across the nation are using much of the same ideas they always have. Its not rocket science...its radio. If you play music your audience likes and you say things to captivate and motivate them, you will do ok.

I do not claim to know everything...there are a ton of people in this biz I greatly look up to and I know I will never hold a candle to, but I think the biggest problem any station can face is when you stray from the basics. We utilized time tested ideas that have proven their effectiveness in the past. Take G101 as you will...like it or hate it..but at least we know we have a gameplan....we have some good imaging...we have a devoted team AND we have the support of ownership...which looking at the changes in this marketplace means everything. I am sure the staff at Hot would have loved to have been so lucky to have the support of their owners. A lot of good, talented jocks got the shaft in that deal.

To clarify...its was B-103 TODAY's BEST MUSIC. I know...I said it on-air a gazillion times...and I still have a dusty old jacket in the closet that says it too. Our slogan is close...but different....and how else would you propose selling a Top 40 anyway. There's The Hit Music Channel...G101...or Today's Hits, G101...I could go on...we considered them all...but Today's Hit Music G101 seemed to be the shoe that fit.

Haha, you are correct sir. it was Today's Best Music. I wouldn't propose to sell TOP 40 with any other slogan. If it works why fix it?
I think fwdmo just likes to pick about things when he says he is asking questions cause he's a curious young lad. No sarcasm just a serious view there fwdmo.
Hitman, when you have a date that the website will be launched, can you give us a heads up?

The website will be up and running in a few weeks, we are waiting to change hosts. Once that is done the website will be down for a day or 2 while we make the final adjustments. Then the new and very user friendly site will be launched.
