Settings for 8100 with xt2

I am looking for proper settings for 8100 with xt2. We run Urban Gospel and I am looking for something loud and hot like the good old days of the 1980's. Z-100 New York sound or Hot Hits WCAU-FM Philly. Thanks!

As the person who created the Z-100 sound, you won't get there with the XT2.

thats a helpful post???

Granted, Frank's post leaves one to imagine what he was using for an airchain, but he was being honest that the sound can not be duplicated with an 8100/XT combo. I met Frank many moons ago when I was active with the NYC SBE Chapter and I wish I could remember the conversation about his airchain, but it was most unique and certainly had a signature sound all its own.

IIRC this is where Frank did the ground work with the Vigilante processor, which would later lead to the Cutting Edge audio processors.

Of course the post was designed to leave one to imagine. Back in the day, that's what we did when others asked, we let them imagine. Here's a story...Not long after Z-100 went on the air, and I got this chain going, I was asked by ther other chiefs, what we were using. I had privately learned what was being used on all the other NYC stations. So, my answer to them was whatever THEIR chain was. If WNEW, 102.7, asked, I told them it was a Harris MSP-90, which is what 'NEW was running. WRKS asked, and I tld them we had the ADR Trans Dynamic, which is what they were using. It was a lot of fun, and kept 'em guessing. Seems that kind of radio is gone now...

Actually, the airchain has been described on numerous list-serves, and in articles on Z-100. But, for those who may not have seen any of those...

The airchain consisted of a set of early Texar Audio Prism's, an EXR Exciter, modified 8100, and a CP-803. That was in 1983. From there it evolved into what later got my company started, as that's where the Vigilante was born. (I still have that unit too!) Once that happened, we only used the stereo gen from the 8100. The Vigilante did the multiband limiting, preemphasis, and final limiting. That's sometime in 1985/1986. The chain was not played/tweaked with all that often. We'd set it, and pretty much forget it.

Hope that helps...

always amazed me you took an Aphex product (dominator)added your own recipe and got this HOT BOX(another idea for your print ad,HA).can you share what was kept and what was replaced in the Aphex.I'm sure it got Aphex's attention.

Sure.

When the Dominator was released, we (Z-100) got a very early unit. (It didn't even have a schematic) It was 'ok' when used lightly, but got real 'bizzy' when pushed for loudness, on a CHR station. To my ear, it sounded like the timing was the same in each band. While I waited for a schematic, I took the lid off and carefully looked at the PCB. I was able to identify where the three bands of control were located, and got a good idea of where the timing components were. What seemed odd, was that all of the timing resistors and capacitors appeared to be the same values. Sure enough, when the manual/schematic arrived, my hunch was on the cash-ola.

The first mods were to tune the timing for the multibands. That smoothed out the 'bizziness.' Next, I was not happy with the 'ALT' circuit (Automatic Limiting Threshold) as it made the box pump, when in heavy depth-of-limiting. I defeated that, and replaced the ALT buss, with individual pots that gave access to the threshold in each band. Next went the LED clippers. Also, changed the LF X-over so that the choices were 120Hz and 160Hz.

That was the first phase. Next came the replacement of the Aphex preemphasis, clipper, LPF. That's a whole other story!!

IIRC, Aphex had a totally different design they showed at an NAB show that never made it to production that sounded more worthy than the finished Dominator product that made the shelves.

You're correct!!

In 1985, they showed a complete box processor. It was designed to take on the Optimod. It had self-adjusting x-overs, and a few other 'interesting' items. I've heard various stories about why that box never happened. The end result (Dominator 700) was nowhere near to what they showed at NAB, with regards to features and such.

I wonder why it never made it to the finish line. Interesting. You have to wonder where things would have been if Aphex would have been that kind of player at that time. Instead, we got the 4 box solution (where the Compellor and Digicoder were the only strong parts) and the 2020, which never turned me on ::)

yep, Aphex dropped the ball bigtime..2020 OK for purist formats and of course Barry Manilow.(ha).I would have loved to be the fly on the wall when they found out Mr.Foti made a killer box out of their dominator...My my my.....
