Severe weather chirp on WSB

What's the deal with that annoying tone/chirp that WSB is running in the background today? They explained that it was due to the severe weather watches that are in effect for the Atlanta area. Is this a new EAS requirement or something WSB is doing on their own? It's running over everything even commercials.

I appreciate good weather coverage but WSB is way over the top and kinda silly in their coverage and this goes for tv also. How many times can Glen Burns say,"straight line winds" in one breath.

Very irritating. I enjoyed the days when the EBS tone used to go off for a severe thurnderstorm warning, and you could hear the computer voice. It only happens on Tornado warnings now.

But when the old EBS tone went off, you knew it meant business. I remember having our EBS monitor in the rack behind my chair while running the board. When the tone went off, it scared you half to death.

Cox has been doing it on their news/talker in Tulsa for a while. Annoying.

A friend of mine who worked at an Atlanta station several years ago tells the story of the PD who, when Atlanta was in a severe drought, carted up the sound of a water sprinkler and instructed the jocks to play the cart at the beginning of the weather forecast (allowing it to establish for about five seconds) and then deliver the forecast. Apparently the jocks made fun of it on air or just couldn't do the weather straight without laughing and the PD got the hint and pulled it.

Hey WSB-AM...here is a clue. If you're gonna run an sounder, you gotta pay it off. Running the chirp and not explaining what the specific weather warning is and what areas it covers is POINTLESS!

Reminds me of that stupid Z93 chirp they used to play in the early 90's. Was supposed to be a pavlovian response kind of thing, but it too was pointless...as if, when they wrote down their listening in the diary, they were going to hear a chirp and say, "oh yeah, I was listening to Z93 today". I've managed to forget that moron's name who was the PD then. Don't remind me.

Severe weather in Phoenix is if it starts raining somewhere and there is air motion. You should see the type of coverage that goes on whenever it happens! Live wall to wall coverage for all the people who didn't evacuate yet to listen to.

However, I do agree with the Dumb Motorists Law here; If you or someone chooses to knowingly drive around a street/area closed flood sign then get stranded in the water, you SHOULD pay for all the tools, time, and work necessary for the rescue. I don't want my tax dollars going to pay for a helicopter over someone who saw the sign, the water, THEN DECIDED TO drive around the sign and attempt to go into the water in their van with their kids.

WTAM/1100 in Cleveland still - by their own volition - runs the basic EBS tone before local weather bulletins (not the ones triggered by the EAS system). Gets your attention in a heartbeat.

Did you hear it on AM 750 or now 98.5 FM?

A guy in the office listens to AM 750 WSBeeeeya all day long. I was ready to throw his radio out the window yesterday after about an hour of that constant waa-waa-waa chirp every 60 seconds. Having worked in radio some years ago I figured I'd ask the "experts" if something has changed with EAS recently. Interesting to know that it's a Cox stunt with no real added value to the listener...

Didn't get a chance to listen to it on WSB yesterday...the Cox news/talker in Tulsa would play it every few minutes on top of their programming (Rush, etc.)--annoying. It was an electronic-sounding two-tone bong, like a doorbell. Is this what WSB was doing?

The Tulsa station would run a spot a couple times an hour explaining the tone...saying that it meant that their "severe weather center has been activated, stay tuned in for the latest severe weather info, blah blah blah..."

I'm gathering that this is intended to be the radio equivalent of a TV crawl.

Lots of radio stations do that. It's the radio equivalent of the TV crawl. It's supposed to alert the listener that severe weather is in the area and they should continue listening for updates. No matter how many times you explain it, there are still people who don't get it. Of course, many of these same people don't even know what station they listen to anyway.

"... the listener... should continue listening for updates..."

Question: Was this "weather chirp" conjured up before the PPM era began? This sounds like a new phenomena to me, based on the comments in this thread. PPM-inspired, perhaps?

Yes I was in Tulsa when they had the blizzard and I heard that noise as well. I kind of like it, also I heard the same kind of thing on WHAS Louisville last week, are they a cox station???
