Severin Out - Graham In

All Access www.allaccess.com is reporting:

Graham Takes Afternoons At WTKK/Boston

Michael Graham
As previously tipped on ALL ACCESS, former WMAL-A/WASHINGTON midday host MICHAEL GRAHAM is taking over afternoons on GREATER MEDIA Talk WTKK (96.9 FM TALK)/BOSTON, effective TODAY (11/14).

GRAHAM has been filling in on WTKK for the past several weeks; he replaces JAY SEVERIN, who is launching a talk show for WESTWOOD ONE in JANUARY and whose BOSTON affiliate is yet to be determined. ALL ACCESS hears that GREATER MEDIA has an exclusive window of negotiation for SEVERIN in the BOSTON market through the end of DECEMBER, and would carry his national show in evenings if a deal is reached.

Listeners Out

Graham. Man oh man. He talks about meter maids, people call in, and he hangs up with them. Hardly any conversation. Eh. Somewhere in New York, Jay is laughing his ass off.

From the 96.9 site:

Greater Media, Inc. is pleased to announce today that Michael Graham, nationally known talk show host, columnist and political consultant, will officially take over as the afternoon drive host on 96.9 FM/ WTKK beginning on Monday, November 14, 2005 from 3PM to 7PM.

The line up page lists Graham, then lists Severin but "without a time slot".

"If We Make It Through December"--George Jones

Well, welcome to Virginia, Michael (I say that because he's probably doing
the show from there...)

And Howie's smiling too.
Actually there are some talk hosts --many, in fact--who let the caller
talk for about a minute and then the host responds for a couple minutes.
Caller isn't let back on. Well, it is the MICHAEL GRAHAM show not the
Michael and His Callers show I guess.

truly a WRKO coup!! celebration time,

Christmas Comes Early For Howie Carr

WTKK just gave Howie Carr a big Christmas present.

Who knows: if Severino re-ups with WTKK, then we might see a lineup of:
--Graham 3-7 pm
--Severin 7-10 pm
--Rebroadcast Hannity 10pm-1 am

or even
--Hannity live 3-6 pm (though they'd prob. want local orgination on,
even if "local" means from Virginia--Graham)
--?? 6-7 pm (maybe rebroadcast Ingraham?)
7-10 pm Severin
10-1 Graham?

and if WBZ takes Severin (they can start to negotatiate the first of
the new year), even more possibilities.

Re: Listeners Out

> Somewhere in New York, Jay is laughing his ass off.

If he's still under contact then he certainly is laughing .... all the way to the bank!

Re: Christmas Comes Early For Howie Carr

Just awful. How to drive the few listeners left away. Howie Carr needs some competition - not for a station to roll over and give him #s by default.
The PD and Graham and Hannity should be given the boot.

Put Air America on 96.9 FM.

Carr is just so predictable. They could put on a "best of" tape and
let it roll, a casual listener would not know the difference. Nothing
new, nothing compelling. As drab & dreary as the new film DERAILED.

That's it - the DERAILED show - featuring WRKO and WTKK

Re: AAR on 96.9

> Put Air America on 96.9 FM.

Bad plan.

But, if Greater Media wanted to try something new (and had the money), how about a locally-programmed liberal talker with the AAR affiliation. Local show during morning drive, perhaps Stephanie Miller or local for 9-12, local host for 12-3, Randi Rhodes for 3-7, local nights, and Mike Malloy for overnights.

If a liberal-targetted station is to be done correctly, it would seem that the station would need to target the entire liberal mindset, and not just random celebrity hosts that happen to be liberals. Perhaps a community calendar with local coffeehouses and events, political rallies, and such. A show on weekend mornings with interviews with local musicians (to take advantage of the FM signal, too). And allow the listeners to make their opinions heard.

A direct feed of AAR on 96.9 will flop miserably, seeing that liberals in Boston are tied to NPR, WUMB, etc. But the state of Massachusetts certainly has plenty of liberals to make a station that utilizes what they want to hear possible. And said station is not WKOXKS.

(Right now, though, this will never happen to WTKK. Regardless if the station's talk shows are any good, they are pulling the ratings and the billing.)

Re: Listeners Out

Do we know for sure that Jay Severin's national show is going to be live in the evenings??

If not, is there any chance the live feed might be from 2 to 6, 3 to 6, or 3 to 7 P.M. Eastern??

If the live feed of Severin ends up in the afternoon, and WTKK-96.9 gets the rights to broadcast the show locally, Graham may end up getting bumped into another timeslot. If WTKK gets Severin's national show, there's no way they're going to run it on tape. There could be a major overhaul of the weekday schedule come January.

Air America Radio is a bust. End of discussion.

Graham's Location, Severin's Time Slot

> Well, welcome to Virginia, Michael (I say that because he's

AllAccess has since clarified that question...they say he's moving to Boston to become "part of the community".

AA also quotes WTKK's GM, as saying they have an exclusive Boston market negotiation window for Severin's national show through December...and if they do land the show, it'll be 7-10 PM on WTKK.

So,

3-7 PM - Michael Graham in studio at WTKK
7-10 PM - Jay Severin wherever he does the new national show from, unless WTKK doesn't reach agreement with Infinity...I presume Hannity would go in the slot in that case.

Maybe they'll hire Graham, and if Severin's show is live in PM drive, they'll move Michael Graham to weekend overnights! Maybe Michael Graham has a new 2 month contract to do PM drive, then he'll do traffic reports instead of a show!

Man, people, do some research.

Once again, AllAccess.com on the above, quoting Greater Media honcho Peter Smyth:

"On SEVERIN, SMYTH says that 'we cannot comment at this point. We are still in an exclusive negotiation period, which goes until the end of DECEMBER. At that point, we'll make a decision one way or another. We, as a company, have to make a decision in terms of what's best for the radio station as well as overall economics. If we are able to reach an agreement, SEVERIN would be a national show, airing from 7p-10p ET.'"

Now, I know you have to sign up for AllAccess and stuff, but it's absolutely free, and darn near necessary for people who comment about radio-related news items on message boards.

WTKK's been so full of it for so long, noone takes 'em at face value anymore. Plus the wishy washy Severino management comments just look foolish

Re: Christmas Comes Early For Howie Carr

The best thing that could happen to AAR right now is for Franken to leave and
run for the Senate, and put someone else on vs. Rush. Al sure did bangup
numbers in Prov, didn't he...which is why WHJJ dumped him.

Point well taken, but it would appear they worded it that way primarily because of Mr. Severin's long-time term doing his show out of Long Island. It sounds like they're saying "look, he's really gonna live in the Boston area! Sorry about that last guy!".
