Severin returns..?

The Boston Herald also reports Jay Severin will return to airwaves Tuesday.

In a statement, station management said they have had conversations with Severin over the past several weeks about his “hurtful, inappropriate remarks” and that he understands the station will not accept “this type of commentary on our airwaves in the future.”

That's weak. I didn't find anything inappropriate about Jay's remarks regarding "criminaliens." The entire point of Jay's show is to be that firebrand. And if someone is here in the USA without authorization, that is criminal according to our laws and an alien is someone without authorization to be in the USA. What's wrong with noticing that?

There is nothing wrong with noticing the fact of an illegal alien's criminal status. What is wrong is characterizing an entire ethnic group as BEING illegals; that's exactly what Severin did. He talked about Mexicans in general as being "criminaliens" and using hospital emergenicy rooms as "condos" (what the hell does that mean, anyway?). That's what brings it into the realm of hate speech.

I've heard that Severin's real name is Severino which, if true, makes him Italian American (as I am myself). This makes him a WOP, which stands for "Without Papers". 70 years ago is was Italians who were being characterized as illegals.

And so it goes. The CRAP never stops in America.

WHen you think about it...this is what comedians do every day...they take one small fact and then exaggerate it...hoping to make people laugh. If you've been in any comedy clubs, you will see that they pick on every race, gender and creed...and poke fun at them. It's not "hate speech"...as much as it's an attempt to get a cheap laugh.

Severin is not a comedian...but I DO think he used the lines he did trying to be amusing...and he failed. Obviously, it was way over the line. And given his politics and stance on the issues, it came across as a bigoted slam (as it was).

However, people generalize all the time. I think Jay is not the "performer" he thinks he is. I don't think he's as amusing with his quips as he thinks he is. I think he has trouble relating to people in general, which is indicative in his desire to do the show from the confines of his gated community....where it's easy to maintain bias and prejudice.
