"Sexyback" on AC?

100.7 WLEV in Allentown, PA is playing these songs. There is no Hot AC in the market, so they may be trying to fill the gap, but it still is rather disconcerting to hear "Sexyback" on an AC station.

CEE LO GREEN F**k You (Forget You)
ENRIQUE IGLESIAS I Like It f/Pitbull
HOT CHELLE RAE Tonight Tonight
KATY PERRY Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)
MAROON 5 Payphone f/Wiz Khalifa
MIKE POSNER Cooler Than Me
EVANESCENCE Bring Me To Life
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE Sexyback

I just checked their playlist on yes.com, and they are not an AC station.

Yes, they are AC - their most current song is Drive By, and they're only playing it 15x a week

I feel like this is going to happen more and more, as the AC format adjusts to Gen X'ers - you are going to hear Justin Timberlake, Evanescence, and Maroon 5 on AC (and even Gotye and Fun)

As long as they're only playing 3-5 currents off the Hot AC chart, these stations are NOT Hot AC, since Hot AC is a current-based format

WLEV, for example is only playing 4 CURRENTS out of the Hot AC Top 50 - Drive By (15x), Payphone (14x), Somebody That I Used To Know (13x), and Rumor Has It (13x)

WLEV has been tweaking their playlist recently, and not for the better. It wasn't too long ago they were still playing "Brown Eyed Girl" all the time, but now they don't play anything older than the '80s. They only played a little Donna Summer when she died and I didn't hear them play any Bee Gees when Robin Gibb passed. Also they recently tried playing "Stereo Hearts" (including the rap sections) but I guess the listener reaction must've been bad because they dropped it after about 2 weeks, and I haven't heard them play it since then.

This is going to keep happening with more and more AC stations, though - most Baby Boomers have aged out of the target demo, so ACs have to shift their playlist to focus on the older end of Gen X

What a peculiar format! The only thing I can think is that it must be just right for Allentown.

It's working well in Charlotte (WLNK) and Atlanta (WSB) - in Charlotte, WLNK, which is similar to the station you're describing in Allentown, is beating out both more traditional ACs - and WSB/Atlanta has its strongest ratings in years (excluding Christmas)

You gotta remember, most Hot ACs now are extremely current-based, very repetitive, and narrow in their playlists, so AC is moving in to fill the "hole" of 90s/2000s tracks that can't be heard anywhere else

Most ACs seem to be ignoring the '90s with the exception of Celine Dion and a few other artists. AC stations seem to be focusing mostly on the 80s and 2000s and the current decade.

Speaking of Celine Dion, are any AC stations playing any of her songs other than "Because You Loved Me", "My Heart Will Go On", and "That's the Way It Is"?

I used to hear "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" played a lot, as well as her version of "All By Myself", but now probably both of those are considered too slow and moody to fit the format anymore.

I rarely hear anything by her other than "Because You Loved Me", and that's rare these days. I haven't heard the latter 2 in several years around here.
