Agreed. BFT is a good guy, and he loves radio. I have a feeling that he writes the column because he wants to - I doubt Hearst pays him much for the column, and he's probably not a regular Chronicle employee - just an independent contractor who supplies 2 columns a month. So if they won't save much money by dropping the column, they probably keep it.
