sf gets another classic hits station

KFRC changed their postioner once again from "the greatest hits of the 70's and 80's" to "the bay area's classic hits", Why don't they just flip to top 40 already or back to oldies :D

CHR is a teen format, and hard to sell when there are rhythmic CHRs in the market... as is the case in SF. They want to move away form 60's oldes as the demos are increasingly over 55 and not salable.

Changing the slogan to "Classic Hits" is hardly a big move - though the music does sound a bit better - more mainstream upbeat hits - less soft rock glop. I think the station sounds significantly better, though it's still a shadow of its former self in terms of on-air staff. I also noticed the addition of some "edgy" (sort of humorous) image announcements a la Max/Jack. They're also running an odd station ID between commercials (voiced by Sue Hall) that says "99 KFRC-99.7." What's the deal with that? I thought stations tried to stay consistent with their branding these days.

New VP/Programming, Mike Preston, is in the house and doing his magic. Indeed, the music changes have been implimented and the imaging now has some attitude. Glad you noticed!Keep listening for more improvements. He intends to build a monster station, worthy of those legendary call letters. ;DJoJo Kincaid

We'll see....everyone has good intentions until they're told they cant' have the money to do it...

So far I'm encouraged...I'm actually listening to the station again, as opposed to quickly changing the channel in the middle of an song by the Little River Band or Bread. Preston will be my hero if he can do something about the longstanding Cammy problem. It can't be possible that she really has a loyal following...can it? I suggest that CBS move her over to sister station KYCY to do podcasts. He could bring back Bobby Ocean, or another of the station's quality former djs...but that's probably too much to expect

I think they should bring back Ocean for PMD and let him do whatever he wants on the air...I agree with you on Cammy...Not sure what the attraction is except she may pull in the females. I may not like her, but she may hit some chords with the women demos. What I think they should do is promote the news guy Mark Nieto to co-host status. I think Dean has a certain attraction for a lot of people, but he's a little "blank" for me on the air. And, hey, if the two actually did show prep, you would really hear the difference....But, they certainly aren't alone among morning shows in THAT category! ::)

Re: esh-f getsh another classhic hits shtation

The last thing KFRC needs is anything on the air that harkens back to 1966. CBS-FM made the same mistake of keeping Harry Harrison and that gang on into their 70s. Great jocks, IN THEIR TIME, but the Boss Jock era is o-v-e-r (and has been since about 1971).

Nobody's talking about going back to the 60s. Bobby Ocean was part of 3 Drake stations in the 70s -including KFRC, but he was also afternoon drive on KFRC as recently as 2004. People are familiar with him, and he's smart and witty. The top rated music station in San Francisco (KOIT) was smart enough to hire him, though he's wasted there reading liner cards, in my opinion. Others on my personal wish list would be Lee Baby Simms who was on Kiss-FM as recently as 2003, or John Mack Flanagan who worked on a number of Oldies, CHR, and Country stations up through the late 90s. Unfortunately, Simms has decided to hang up his mic after a long career, and from what I've heard - JMF now has a good career in the public sector, and wouldn't return to radio on a bet. But there are others like these two who are familiar to Bay Area audiences, and would sound great on KFRC. I bet K-Earth in LA wishes they had the Real Don Steele and Robert W. Morgan back.

Bobby O.

a fabulous, wonderful talent- but eventually you have to move on. And, the 2004 vintage KFRC Bobby was on was a terribly broken radio station. The "nostalgia" effect that used to be the hallmark of original Oldies stations is now a big, huge trap that 40-somethings wouldn't caught dead listening to.

I understand that the people who program stations now avoid concepts like "baby boomer" and "Oldies" like they're the plague....kind of like Democrats shunning the concept "liberal." Nevertheless, It seems to me that having disc jockeys that (1) show some personality and are more than liner card readers, and (2) are familiar to the listeners in the "target demographic" - should still be a plus for a station struggling to find its identity and a larger audience. OK - forget the 70s. Being too..."classic" (i.e.: old) myself, and not a person who spent much time listening to CHR stations in the 80s and 90s, I'm not up on the names, but I'm sure someone could name some good Bay Area DJs from the 80s and 90s.Besides, it's RADIO - nobody cares if these guys have dentures and gray hair. Have you seen a photo of Don Bleu lately? A nice looking guy, but definitely heading toward his golden years. Don was a Top 40 jock in the early 60s - way before Ocean, John Mack Flanagan, and many others now included in your "nostalgia trap" category.

sf

it's all in the image- in today's 25-54 environment, you can do your Oldies-image with mostly 60s music and mostly 60s jocks doing top 5 countdowns and on-this-day-in-rock-and-roll-history vs. my station with a 60s/70s mix and contemporary, non-boss-jock talent that are talking about topical and relevant things in 40-somethings' lives and I'll win every time. You may win 55+ but that's OK because there are no ad buys for 55+ listeners out there today.
