Shaggy on Lite FM, Timberlake on PLJ

Even though we've discussed many times in the past various songs/artists that Lite FM has played that absolutely don't seem to fit in to their format, as well as the obvious reasons why they would play them (to get younger listeners, to keep the playlist fresh, to shake off the mold of being the "old" and "boring" Lite station, etc.), I thought it was noteworthy to hear Lite FM play yesterday, around 12:30 pm or so, "Angel" by Shaggy, which really stuck out like a sore thumb when I heard it....I had to look twice to make sure I hadn't put on KTU or even Z100.

At what point, however, does Lite FM go *too* far with the music they've added. Granted, they want to keep and attract younger listeners, but might they also risk losing some office listening by playing the likes of Shaggy, when there are other "safe" options now in CBS-FM and Fresh?

Also, they seem to be treading dangerously close to their sister station, KTU, especially with KTU leaning older. In fact, now that KTU has added a lot of non-rhythmic cuts to its playlist, it sounds more like Lite FM than ever. At what point will the two stations just do more harm to each other rather than good for the CC cluster?

Also noteworthy, around 1 or so, I heard PLJ play "Rock Your Body" by Justin Timberlake, which also seemed a bit unusual, as I can't recall them playing any Timberlake recently, and I'm not sure if they even played that song back in 2003 when it first came out. That being said, PLJ also seems to be loosening up its playlist just a little, by adding the likes of Beyonce and older cuts by TLC.

The music tweaking at PLJ is pretty interesting. At various times in the past (and after their CHR days in the 80s), they've occasionally added more contemporary pop and r&b cuts into their playlist (such as for a spell in the late 90s), only to go away from that after a while. A few years ago, and before Jack launched, PLJ's pendulum swung in the other direction, as they added lots of cuts from the 70s and 80s that hadn't received airplay in a while. Obviously, they've gone far away from that now. None of the tweaks seems to have a significant effect on their mediocre ratings, however.

You do realize the Shaggy song is now almost a 10 year old song, extremely familiar, more than likely tests extremely well with the 25 to 34 yr old females, and that's a demo that time and again is very, very receptive to reggae flavored music. Beyonce and Timberlake are also artists that have been around for about 10 years, their pop culture appeal is enormous even outside the obvious demographics...I don't think it's that much of a stretch at this point to play these artists.
