Shake up at Oldies?

I hope not. I think JJ is a much better fit. Karen would be good for middays or even with Dale in the morning..

Yep, it's a true story: Karen Blake (aka The Madame) to do afternoons, JJ Wright gets bumped to overnights and Maurice Wilkey is headed to the beach. So it looks like an "extreme makeover" over at OLDIES 103.3. Boy, JJ must have pissed somebody off. Midday numbers have been too strong to mess with Paula Street. This sounds as if new PD Pete Falconi wants to make his mark on the station, for he worked with Blake at the old Eagle.

Exactly the lineup I heard but could not confirm. Karen in afternoons in lieu of JJ? with all due respect to "the Madame" I question the wisdom of that move.

your hopes have been dashed. kb is the new afternoon person.
awful, absoulutely awful patronage move. isn't she associated with the
all-time loser formats(eagle, star, z94.5,etc) which probably
spells the kiss of death for oldies. they just moved another
step closer to jack.

agreed. that's what you get when you bring on one-dimensional tunnel vision
pd's.

maybe with all the voice stuff JJ's been doing for 'BZ, they want to utilize
him during the day for voice-over/production and/or out of market tracking?

just a thought. i know he has a home studio.

the move itself, with all due respect to Ms.Blake... more than a bit puzzling,
especially for "The Falcon." (pete's old Bud Ballou-era club day
nom du guerre)

I think bringing on Karen Blake is a great move. She has always been one of my favorite personalities. I have liked JJ over the years as well but I would guess that his ratings probably aren't what they should be. Could Karen also be poised to do other things at the station? I just hope they allow her to be the person she was at "Star" and don't hold her back (I especially liked her on with Ralphie Marino) I think Pete Falconi made a smart move - Oldies is getting a bit stale and needs a little change like this. Any word on when she starts?

YES!!! I have missed some of the dj's at Star. I am so happy to hear that Karen is going back on the radio. Does anyone know where the rest of the crew is? I know "Lady D" is doing nights at Mix (you could also say Jerry McKenna is a one dimensional pd by bringing her into the Mix) what about Mark Clark and Mike Mcgowen where are they?

But if "Jack" is in Infinity's near-to-intermediate-term plans for 103.3, wouldn't Karen Blake have not been hired there??

Or maybe another opening will develop in the next few months at sister station WBMX-98.5. Blake may only be at Oldies 103.3 until the opening at Mix develops. That may be around the same time WODS gets "Jacked" (if it is).

what opening at Mix? I think blake at oldies is great. JJ will still be on overnights, he will do fine there. Has that smooth overnight voice for radio. When is this gonnna take place.

>>>>Z-945 was a success until its purchase and later course change to hip hop.

As for linking Karen Blake to the over all failure of a weak frequency that lacked marketing and strong company leadership is a stretch at best and more likely ignorance at its worst.

Star 937 clearly lacked a long term vision. Their music mix was not competitive. They played many unfamiliar titles in key day parts. Music is 95% of your product.

With that said, I don’t believe Mike FM is an improvement. As a matter of fact it’s worse. Mike will not be on at this time next year.

What should have happened to 937 was a focused well executed hit based version of Star 937 with New Imaging and some air staff changes i.e. PM Drive & Nights. Add plenty of outside marketing only after the air sound was corrected and I believe 937 would have had a win.

If you factor out music, no one element can make or break a station. Success is many elements working well together as a system and team that will ultimately lead to success.

Karen Blake is a pro. Period. Her Q scores rival Matt Segal. I think Falconi made a very smart choice if he is attempting to freshen up a stale product. But I again remind you it’s not just one element that will lead to target demo success. An over all plan must be executed. The real question is: Is a plan based on local research now being executed?

I would compare Karen Blake to Corey Dillon of the Patriots. I wish her Good luck!

In a year we will all know the answer.

Was this something that JJ Wright wanted? Sounds very bizarre to me. Also, while I like Karen Blake, I cannot see how she will fit well with the Oldies 103.3 format, but then again she has been quite successful in other radio formats: Country, 70's Rock, CHR, Rhythmic, etc.

apparently, from very reliable, knowledgeable sources:

no, not what JJ wanted.

and KB has NOT been "quite successful" in other formats. she has, like others in the market, had her "moments." but not consistently.

and please, do NOT take that as a slam on Karen. very nice, funny and personable lady.

but she ain't no JJ Wright.

I agree, Karen is a very entertaining lady on the radio and that is why I have enjoyed her for many years. I think she will do well at Oldies...lets face it if JJ was so great then why is the station looking for a change? Karen Blake can't hire herself. Infinity obviously sees value in her. I find her extremely relatable (maybe its because I am from Boston) I must say when my friends find out she's coming back on the radio...they'll probably suffer through "Hermans Hermits" just to hear if she's got something funny to say! No kidding she's "no JJ Wright" he's kinda boring in my opinion. At least Karen always sounds like she's having fun. I can't wait to hear her again!

I just don't see Infinity to bring Jack into Boston. This even before Entercom switched 93.7 to Mike FM. Reason for this is that 101.7 and 98.5 Infinity's other Boston area stations would be playing the same songs as Jack would.

You're correct. She a'int no JJ Wight. Thats a good thing! To my knowledge In the Spring ratings book JJ was 13th in Adults 25-54. Now you know why a change is being made. I have heard people (listener types) talk about their favorite Disc Jockeys and everytime I have heard them mention Karen Blake they would go on about how much they liked her. When they would talk about someone like JJ it wasn't with the same passion in their voice. It was kinda like he didn't matter one way or the other. Lets face it Oldies plays the same music day in and day out. That station needs a change. I would bet that once Karen goes on the radio people will buzz about the station in a good way. It is something that Oldies really needs right now. To be honest though, I am surprised that she's not on the morning show. I used to laugh everytime she did her entertainment reports.

The plan was to "Jack" 98.5 to take it out of the picture.

In addition, Infinity does have other markets in which Jack competes heavily with other local Infinity stations. Las Vegas and Baltimore both have co-existing Hot AC outlets, and Chicago has a AAA/Rock station (WXRT).
