Shakeup at "the Big Talker 1210 WPHT"

Thanks for the post Julius. I find it interesting that PHT shook things up. I like the idea of local talk in the Philly market during day hours. Rush pulls in monster numbers so I am not surprised they kept him, but I would have moved Beck into a delayed broadcast in the evenings. I think he has a niche audience. I don't see the number demo's so what do I know.

P.S. Mike -- If anyone else also posted would you have responded the same way you did to Julius. You people crack me up with your bullying. Keep up the good work Julius. I don't post often but I do enjoy yours.

I'm not saying a local mid-morning show in a major market is a bad idea, either from a revenue perspective or even in this case a ratings one, but to say in 2010 that Glenn Beck has a "niche" audience is a bit silly. In publicist speak, he has the #3 talk show in the country, does a gazillion events a year, has a new book out every time you turn around, has a top-rated cable news show, guest hosted Larry King and now recurs weekly on O'Reilly's #1 TV show... he's not doing that because he has a cult following.

Ugh.

Keep talk (and sports for that matter) on AM. This means one less potential music format on FM. It's inevitable, sure, but I don't like it.

Plus there's a whole new generation so weaned on FM that they have never heard of the AM dial, nor will ever consider tuning into that bandwidth. I'm by nature more predisposed to AM/FM simulcasts rather than abandoning that dial altogether... primarily because of the skywave and national defense factor.

By the way, Smerconish was pleading to his local listeners during the top of this hour (the six minute window before the national part of the morning show resumes) to follow him to afternoons. Not a word about his local replacement in the daypart, Chris Segal, incidentally.

Might CC react to this with Rush Radio 106.1? :)

I don't know - hard to do without Rush himself, wouldn't it? ::)

If CC flips 104.5 or 106.1 to Rush Radio, of course they'll pull Rush off 1210. What's to stop CC from doing that? With two underperforming FMs in Philly, CC has the option to flip one to Rush Radio. :)

National defense factor? Like traffic alerts?

CC set up FM talkers in Pittsburgh (WPGB) and New Orleans (WRNO) several months before yanking Rush away from his established affiliates (KDKA and WWL, respectively). WRNO's on-air positioner was "NewsTalk995.com" before acquiring Rush; the weekend beforehand, they stunted by playing "A.O. My City Was Gone" and taking the "Rush Radio" handle.

From what we are reading in the other thread, the answer to your question is "a contract." If whoever wrote that is correct, they can't pull Rush off 1210 for another 2 years.

When did 104.5 become an underperforming FM? Just this month? Flipping it now would be a panic move.

106.1 is underperforming, but they just last week changed the name and tweaked the format.

That said, I think the future of radio is talk (live talk, not tape delay on PM drive). Not just because AM is becoming obsolete, but also because the options, other than radio, for music are so much better than they've ever been.

K -- I know what Beck's numbers and book sales are. His audience is a cult and I don't mean that in a bad way. He is a controversial figure who pulls in huge numbers. That's why I suggested PHT hold onto his rights if they can and air him at night. People would still tune in especially the die-hards driving through the area grabbing the 1210 signal.

Did WPGB and WRNO yank Rush away from KDKA and WWL before his contract with the latter stations was up? ???
