Shall we talk about the latest book?

Only three really interesting things that I saw-

WISH took a bit of a hit, but I get the feeling it was more of the natural process of a station going up and down than anything else. The station is still doing well.

On the other hand, look at WPTT's mark. I'm convinced every single one of Doug Hoerth's listeners have posted on an internet message board. There's little mystery to why he was let go- sadly.

The other thing I noticed was that B-94's number, while improved, was still modest.

I realize it takes time for an audience to build and the budget for B94 was spent long ago.

However, since they were going BACK to a format that supposedly everyone wanted, and since we heard about nightclubs throwing B94 parties and such, shouldn't we expect more than a number than didn't beat WORD?

I'm sure the B-94 supporters will say that when the budget comes in for more promotion and when the Jocks are all in place the station will prosper.

And I'm sure the number will improve then.

But I'm NOT sure it will do as well as K-Rock did during their peak.

I think Wish took a little bit of a dive because of all the christmas music being played 24/7 for the last month. I would imagine the ratings for Wish will go back up a bit after christmas and should do better in the full book next month.

LTJ has been struggling before Christmas and has been this way over the last year or two. Considering we have 2 AC stations with Wish and LTJ in the Burgh, maybe they need to flip LTJ to something else. Wish has been winning the AC battle for a long time now. The question is will Steel City Media make a change? I personally think they keep LTJ as is.

ESPN Radio always seems to go up during Steeler season. I think they will drop slightly after February. I think if ESPN went local all day, they would have even better ratings. However, I believe they are required to have at least one or two national shows a day.

Only time will tell for what happens with B 94.

I also noticed that 3WS slipped a bit. Are people tired of the 60's, 70's and 80's playlist already? Listening to 3WS over the last month or so, they seem to be playing more classic rock songs more than ever. Will a true oldies station ever do well in the Burgh again?

I was a little surprised that Star 100.7 is climbing the ratings again. Maybe the no repeat workdays with the less repitition is helping. It will be interesting to see how the morning show with JR & Kate do now that Bubba is gone.

The only three radio stations that seem to be consistant over the last 3-5 years are WDVE, KDKA AM and WDSY.

I was listening to B94 coming back to work from lunch and they ran a quick promo saying about Bubba will be with Flick at the New Year's Eve thing. Then it was a, "Bubba's coming back?" which led into him saying, "I'm coming back to B94!" SO...what's up with the rest of the Morning Show?

The ratings scenario is interesting. I think the majority of people realize that B94 is back, however, as I was driving the other day and flipping through the stations, my friend nearly made me drive the car off the road when I hit 93.7 and she realized it was B94 again! SO...there are still some people living under a rock. Maybe billboards, advertisements, etc. where people are bound to see them. Also, KISS does seem to have a pretty loyal audience. It's bizarre, but KISS became "THE" Top 40 station for the younger crowd once B94 left in '03. Basically, the tables are turned. B94 has to regain their "spot" in Pittsburgh and attempt to nudge KISS out. Personally I don't think killing KISS will be as easy as anticipated...

Also, what's with STAR? Why is this such a difficult concept? Get ALL the music that B94 would play OFF of STAR and onto B94, permanently! STAR's image was tweaked a little bit with the "Your music, your station!" thing, but I thought the idea was to make B94 CBS's saving grace? Some people may argue STAR would be killed...should they try another rock type station on 100.7? K-ROCK did work momentarily...thoughts?

I believe these ratings for 93.7 are still 1/3 The Zone. Is that correct? Also, I agree that there is basically NO PROMO whatsoever for the station in these first few months. Hopefully the billboards and commercials will start in the New Year. They're going to need a strong morning show if they want to beat Kiss.

It does seem that B is trying to compete with Star more so than Kiss. What is the point of competing with a station from the same company?! The B and Star morning show are probably going to be similar and the music is overlapped between the two stations way too much. B even plays some songs that are exclusive to HOT AC format (Star) that rarely get played on Pop stations. If Star changed to another format, I bet B's ratings could rise to a solid 4.0.

I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet a dollar that the Fall Part 2 trend I'm referring to did not include The Zone- which went away in September.

Todd- I think 104.7 has been consistent for the past three years.

Also- what is a "true" oldies station?

Finally, YES- PITTSBURGH NEEDS ANOTHER ROCK STATION.

WDVE has yet to discover 1980. The X is modern. There's 27 years of rock Pittsburgh listeners are missing out on.

Perhaps that's where 3WS is putting more classic rock into their playlist. I haven't listened or noticed the station much because I still have it in my head that they are the oldies station, but I'll check it out.

This trend is Sept-Oct-Nov.

You can't draw any conclusions until the winter book comes in.

Okay Part.

But let me ask- wouldn't the Part 2 trend be October solely?

And wouldn't that then be all of B-94 and none of The Zone?

Thanks for your help.

Part 2 is Sept-Oct-Nov.

These numbers are all 3-month rolling averages.

Subscribers can see "extraps" (extrapolation...math term) that are a little more raw data.

But no, you can't really achieve instant success until all of the Zone months drop out. It's why there was no rush to spend the money to put an airstaff on (aside from the fact that there was NO money available), but why staff the station when it can't generate ratings and revenue?

That's why we've been saying all along that the real B would emerge after the first of the year.
