I'm not a fan of 2 females in the morning...BUT they needed to do something if they want to compete with Power 99. Hot 107.9 will never be the ratings powerhouse like WUSL because of the signal but the more they can dig away, the better for them. Shamara has been on Philly radio and has a following and is a strong personality and Laiya was good on The Beat. Miss Jones in NYC & Philly. De De Mcguire on K104 in Dallas. All successful hosted by females. Maybe they'll add a male eventually. Good luck to them!
Couple of problems there. First, when Power99 became a powerhouse, it was because WDAS_FM had abandoned youth and went Adult AC [ i remember they even cut the raps out of songs by TLC/BBD and other mixed-style groups ].
As for the signal, I don't accept that excuse because WRNB, i believe, had higher ratings when they were at 107.9 than The Beat has now. I think The Beats' biggest problem is technology. Most of the audience they want to attract finds it's music in places other than radio, so radio needs to offer something the internet can't, and I have NO idea on what that could be.
As for the "succesful women" in philadelphia radio, why can't they hold a job if the are that good? Patti Jackson has been at WDAS-FM forever because her ratings are that good. I don't think that any of the women you mentioned have been at the same station or the same timeslot for a more than 2 years at at time, and i'm being generous. If i'm wrong, please let me know because i don't like being wrong or misinformed.
One last thing, it was the debut of The Beat back in 1997 that marked the end of Power99 as Philly's urban leader, as 100.3 or 103.9 [ by whatever name they used then ], took away the younger end of Power's demo. That was what allowed WDAS-FM to return to prominence (sp). The unwillingness to grow with it's listeners, is part of why The Beat will never outrate WUSL, IMHO.
