Shame on WMTW

Instead of leading their 11pm newscast with actual news, they devoted over five minutes to the Patriots Wild-Card win and did a story showing a bunch of drunks, and what appeared to be under 21-girls doing Pats cheers in a bar, obviously hammered (practically a free advertisement for Rivarlies Sports Bar, too.)

Then, weather.

Then, oh, by the way, there was an armed bank robbery with shots fired. Haven't the unusually rampant rate of Southern Maine robberies been significant news of late?

It doesn't matter that WMTW's lead-in programming was the Patriots game. Poor news judgement on their part.

News 8 WMTW, where the news comes last. Kind of like their ratings.

Save that crap for their sports segment. Do they forget that there ARE people in Maine who could care less for the Patriots? OK, maybe they're in the minority, but they are out there. Anyways, who owns their station? H-A, or Robert Kraft?
______________

I'm a Pats fan too but it looks like local sports teams that do well
take away from "other" news, and that's sad. Tonight on WBZ/4 in Boston (11 pm)
there were a few headlines and then 30 minutes straight of Pats post-
victory talk (and the game wasn't even on CBS4, it was on ABC5). Call them
SportsTalkChannel4. I'll bet the other newscasts in Boston did much the same,
maybe Ch 5 as well since they were coming out of the game.
______________

For all we know, Arial Sharon could have died from his stroke or the other WV coal miner could have passed, yet they'd still do the wall-to-wall-butt-kiss-to-the-Patriots act first. Enough! Let Chris Collins on NECN do that and let channels 6,8 and 13 stick to real news (4,5, and 7 in Boston).
______________

Calm down people, they are The NEW ENGLAND Patriots, and last time I checked, Maine was still a part of New England. Not only that. The Patriots are on track to win their 3rd Super Bowl in a row, As far as I know, that's never been done by any team....this is big news. Also, with the win on Saturday, Tom Brady's post-season record climbed to 10 wins and zero loses...he beat the previous record of 9. This is also huge. So you'll forgive the news for not leading off with best places to cow-tip.

Wait until the Sports segment of the newscast to kiss their a...I mean report on all of that.

I should go to Denver, drink at The Wrangler, and root on the Pats!

To be honest, I am a Miami Dolphins fan and have been one since 1983. The Patriots are my arch-rival, so, natuarally, I will root for whoever they're playing. As for the media in Maine kissing the proverbial ass of the Patriots, I fully expect them to. I've lived in Wells and Old Orchard Beach. I also visit Portland a few times a year. As for me, I think it's funny how Portland likes to think of itself as "North Boston", even though they're only 1/10 the size! Speaking of Boston and WCVB-TV channel 5 carrying the game, did Hearst-Argyle tell WMTW's News Director to lead with the Patriots? These days, I live outside of Hartford and am glad that we at least get a Boston/New York sports split.

GO DENVER! TRAMPLE THE PAT-SIES!
______________

Obviously, your sports allegances are interfering with your postings. But so are mine.

What other city are they going to look up to? Allegances in Maine are clearly with Boston; it's the largest city anywhere nearby, and it's also linked closely with Boston with the popular Downeaster train (plus bus and flights as well). Unlike your Hartford, or most other US cities, Portland is not between any two significant cities. While Boston is on the south, there are no metropolises to the north or near-west.

Media wise, the power of WBZ radio essentially forced 106.7 WMTW out of the news radio business (of course, there was the Nassau sale and competition from WGAN). WMKI and other older Boston station can be picked up into Maine on a good day, and WSBK was available on Time Warner Cable for many years. Remember the commercials for 106.7 with B&M factory workers shouting, "Boston doesn't know beans about Maine!"? Obviously there's no need for Boston media to, but Portland looks to it anyway.

Was it wise for WMTW to lead with a Patriots story? If it was a slow news night, probably. As the Patriots are a team that most of New England is aligned with (excluding much of Connecticut and parts of western MA and VT), it makes perfect sense for the crowd-pleasing team to make the headlines. Especially when they're last in line with the real news, taking a general story like the Pats may attract some sort of audience.

Were you expecting Jets coverage on WMTW? Other than the fans of various national teams in Maine, you're not very likely to find fans of New York-based teams.

FWIW, Ch. 7 did a normal (for them) newscast at 11 that night. Sure, there was plenty of Pats coverage, but attention was given to other happenings as well. They didn't go overboard like CBS4 did (one story, quick weather, Patriots infomercial).
______________
