Shane Co Commericals

Tom Shane has been running a new spot the last week or so where he reads some mail about how terrible and boring is commercials are. At the end, he annouces that he's hired a fancy ad agency to do his commercials from now on.

How long has he been doing Shane Co commericals? Like, forever, right?

I still remember the old closing "the Shane Company at our original location in Downtown Seattle at 4th and Stewart. Open weekdays til 6, Saturdays and Sundays til 5" or something like that.

I remember the slightly later tag: "The Shane Company, in the Marsh & McClennan Building at 720 Olive Way, corner of 8th and Olive Way, downtown Seattle. Open Monday through Friday til 8, Saturday and Sunday til 5."

"The Shane Company. Corner of 4th and Stewart, just north of the Westlake Center in downtown Seattle. Open 7 days a week including Monday thru Friday til 8 Saturday and Sunday till 5"

I'm nearly 30 now and that tag has been permanently embedded in my brain. All from having school bus drivers always having the radio tuned to KPLZ.

What do you think of the TV spots? Looks like he's going after a "T-Man" mystique thing by never showing his face. Could be a good hook ... but so far the TV campaign is capitalizing on the familiarity of the radio campaign. Hasn't tried to "sell" the Shane Co as a jewelry store --- only Tom's Image.

I've heard those too. Not sure if it's just a jab at himself or if he's really going to do it. I remember the first day or so that The End signed on, whoever was on the air took a call from someone begging them not to EVER play Tom Shane commercials. They were on soon after though.

A businessman that "gets" effective advertising...gotta love that :)

Re: Shane Co Commericals - The sad part

Long time radio advertiser moving his budget to TV. Look at the threads here.
The radio ads definitely worked. He built his business on radio, now he's moving a large chunk of budget to TV.
Kinda like the Orek Vacuum guy. Another loss for us...

I grew up in a different market. "Just off Arapahoe Rd. and Euporia St. One half mile East of I-25. Open every day, Monday-Friday 'til 8. Saturday and Sunday 'til 5."

Yup, it's been stuck in my brain for 20 years.

I believe they opened their store and started running radio ads in Seattle around 1982; the company is based in the Denver area (the corporate office is in Englewood) but they have stores in several markets around the country. I've actually met Tom Shane in person and he's much more animated than on his radio ads...I guess that's not saying much.
